What is the method for grading childhood obesity?

People's material conditions are better now, and parents want to give their children the best, so they let their children eat very well. As a result, in life, children who are obviously overweight can be seen everywhere. Obesity in children is very harmful. In addition to endangering health, a child's poor body image will also undermine self-confidence. So, scientifically, how are obese children classified?

Childhood obesity classification:

Obesity is a nutritional disorder caused by excessive accumulation of fat in the body and body weight exceeding a certain range, due to long-term energy intake exceeding the body's consumption. So what is the standard for childhood obesity? How is it classified?

Obesity is a nutritional disorder caused by excessive accumulation of fat in the body and body weight exceeding a certain range, which is due to long-term energy intake exceeding the body's consumption. As people's living standards improve and dietary structure changes, childhood obesity is on the rise. Obesity not only affects the health of children, but also becomes a contributing factor to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, jaundice, gout and sudden death in adulthood. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of this disease should attract the attention of society and families.

In terms of quantity, obesity is when the fat content exceeds the standard by 15%. If this value is calculated based on body weight, it means that the total body fat content is approximately 20% higher than the standard body weight, which is 15% higher than the normal fat content. Therefore, obesity is currently defined as a body weight that is 20% greater than the reference population.

The reference population weight mentioned here refers to the weight-for-height standard recommended by the World Health Organization and formulated by the U.S. Centers for Health Statistics (NCHS)/Centers for Disease Control (CDC), also known as the standard weight for height. If the kaup/bmi index is used, its cut-off point still needs to be studied.

Obesity is graded as follows:

Overweight: 10% to 19% greater than the reference population weight;

Mild obesity: 20% to 39% greater than the reference population weight;

Moderate obesity: 40% to 49% greater than the reference population weight;

Severe obesity: greater than 50% of the reference population weight.

The exaggerated decline in obesity rates:

Medscape medical reporter asked Professor Dr. Skinner why there were previous reports and relevant data showing that the obesity rate among preschool children has decreased?

Professor Skinner pointed out that according to statistics, the obesity incidence rate among children aged 2 to 5 was 13.9% from 2003 to 2004, but it did drop to 8.4% from 2011 to 2012.

However, the authors of this article deliberately did not emphasize this point because they also found that in the data from 1999 to 2014, the obesity rate among children aged 2 to 5, both boys and girls, did not change much.
