What pacifiers should be used for newborns?

Generally speaking, most newborn babies are breastfed, but some mothers have no milk and can only feed their babies with milk powder. However, for new parents, they have no experience in this regard, and there are a variety of pacifiers on the shelves in maternity and baby stores. They don’t know which one to buy. So what kind of pacifier is generally better for newborns?

What pacifiers should be used for newborns?

Currently, there are two main types of baby bottles on the market based on their manufacturing materials: PC (polycarbon fiber, a non-toxic plastic, commonly known as space glass) and glass. PC is lightweight and not fragile, making it suitable for going out and for older babies to hold by themselves. But its "endurance" in withstanding repeated disinfection is not as good as that made of glass. Glass bottles are more suitable for mothers to feed their babies at home.

Round shape: suitable for babies from 0 to 3 months old. During this period, the baby mainly relies on the mother to feed him with milk and water. The round neck of the bottle is smooth, and the liquid inside flows smoothly. It is best to use a small size for breastfed babies to drink water, and a large size can be used to store breast milk. Babies who are fed by other methods should be fed with large bottles so that they can eat enough at one time.

Arc-shaped and ring-shaped: Babies over 4 months old have a strong desire to grasp things. The arc-shaped bottle is like a small dumbbell, and the ring-shaped bottle is an oblong "O" shape. They are easy for babies to hold in their little hands to satisfy their desire to feed themselves.

Small bottle with handle: Babies around one year old can hold the bottle to eat by themselves, but they often cannot hold it steadily. This bottle, which is similar to a training cup, is specially prepared for them. The two movable handles make it easy for babies to hold it with their little hands, and the handles can also be adjusted according to the posture, whether sitting or lying down.

With the right bottle, you also need the right nipple. Pacifiers are made of rubber and silicone. The rubber pacifier is elastic and has a texture similar to the mother's nipple; the silicone pacifier does not have the peculiar smell of rubber, is easily accepted by the baby, is not easy to age, and is heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant. The baby's sucking time should be between 10 and 15 minutes. Too long or too short is not conducive to the normal development of the baby's oral cavity. Careful mothers will find that there are many types of small holes on the nipple of the bottle. They are mainly:

Small round hole (Size S): Suitable for newborns who cannot control the amount of milk yet.

Medium round hole (M): Suitable for babies aged 2-3 months who take too long to suck milk with the S size. The amount of milk extracted from this nipple and the number of sucking movements performed are very close to those from sucking a mother's breast.

Large round hole (size L): Suitable for babies who use the above two nipples to feed for too long but the amount is insufficient and who are light in weight.

Y-shaped hole: suitable for babies who can control the amount of milk they suck and play while drinking.

Cross-shaped hole: suitable for sucking juice, rice noodles or other coarse-grained drinks, and can also be used for feeding.

Once you know these models, you can choose the right nipple for your bottle according to your needs.
