Newborn baby sleeps too long

Newborn baby sleeps too long

Babies need a certain amount of sleep when they are just born, and basically, except for the time when they are feeding, they are asleep at other times. Therefore, parents do not need to worry too much if the baby sleeps too long. They just need to take good care of the baby, because this is relatively normal. However, if the baby did not sleep for a long time before and suddenly sleeps longer, it may mean that the baby has some health problems.

1. Is it normal for babies to sleep too long?

First-time mothers will find that newborns sleep a lot. In fact, this is very normal. If a newborn baby sleeps about 18 to 22 hours a day, this is normal. In addition, as the baby grows older, his sleep time will gradually decrease.

If the baby sleeps through most of the night, he or she will still sleep a lot during the day. Even if the baby sleeps up to twenty hours a day and is awake for very short periods of time, the mother should not panic. Because your baby is still adjusting to the new environment and going through rapid growth at the same time. It is a good thing for babies to get a lot of sleep in their early years, as it means they are growing and developing, and because growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland at a rapid rate, babies need sleep.

2. Achieve a balance between alertness and sleep

How well the sleep cycle is established determines whether parents feel a sense of accomplishment in raising their baby. Based on this sense of accomplishment, communication between parents and babies becomes easier. But at the same time, newborns are influenced by their mothers and are alert from birth so that they can respond to various stimuli.

This requires a balance between alertness and sleep, and establishing this balance requires the help of parents, so the baby's normal sleep should not be deliberately disrupted to avoid behavioral disorders.

3. Doctors need to intervene when pathological problems occur in sleep

If an infant sleeps lightly or wakes up frequently at night, he or she may have a sleep disorder. Insufficient sleep or poor quality sleep can cause excessive daytime sleepiness and reduced daytime wakefulness levels.

It manifests as abnormal emotions and behavioral problems, such as overactivity and poor impulse control, including inattention and reduced vigilance, and over time, learning and social adaptation problems will occur.
