What should I do if my baby has a lot of phlegm in his throat?

It is very common for babies to have phlegm in their throats. If the baby's mental state is relatively good, you don't need to go to the hospital first. Give the baby more water and let the baby rest. Then give the baby some expectorant and cough-relieving medicines. If the symptoms cannot be relieved, it is best to take the baby to the hospital as soon as possible. You can do nebulization to promote the elimination of phlegm. Never give the baby medicine privately.

What to do if your baby has phlegm in his throat

1. Maintain appropriate temperature and humidity

First of all, we need to keep the indoor air circulating and open the windows for ventilation regularly. It is best to keep the indoor temperature at 18-22 degrees, but be careful not to let the cold wind blow directly on the child.

The relative humidity should be maintained at 60%-65%. You can use a wet cloth to mop the floor to increase the humidity in the room. This is beneficial to keeping the respiratory mucosa moist and the cilia on the mucosal surface moving, which helps with the discharge of sputum.

2. Pat the back

It can be used as an emergency measure to help with expectoration when the baby cannot cough up phlegm.

When your baby is coughing, let him/her lie on his/her side or hold him/her in a lying position. The mother slightly bent the five fingers of one hand, made a fist, and gently patted the child's back. Pat your left side and lie on your left side, alternating between the two sides.

The force of the slapping should not be too great, and it should be done from top to bottom and from outside to inside, in sequence. Pat each side for at least 3-5 minutes, 2-3 times a day.

The back-patting method can not only loosen the phlegm in the baby's lungs and bronchi, drain it into the trachea and discharge it, but also promote blood circulation in the heart and lungs, which is beneficial to the absorption of bronchial inflammation and enables early recovery from the disease.

3. Drinking water method

Let your baby drink more water, especially cold boiled water at about 23 degrees, which has a good moisturizing and physical therapeutic effect on the throat and is beneficial to the elimination of local inflammation.

Babies with severe coughs often have varying degrees of dehydration, which can aggravate respiratory inflammation and the thickness of secretions, making them difficult to cough up.

Drinking more cold boiled water can dilute the sticky secretions, making them easier to cough out, which is beneficial for relieving cough and removing phlegm.

At the same time, cold boiled water can improve blood circulation, so that the waste or toxins produced by the body's metabolism can be quickly excreted from the urine, thereby reducing its irritation to the respiratory tract.

4. Steam method

Pour boiling water into a large pot or teacup, hold your baby, and let his mouth and nose face the rising steam and inhale and exhale. This can thin the phlegm and facilitate coughing out. It can also reduce congestion and edema of the trachea and bronchial mucosa and reduce coughing. But be careful to avoid burns and accidents. This method can also relieve nasal congestion.

5. Dietary conditioning and expectoration method

This method can be described as the "most painless" method. You will be healed and gradually recover while your taste buds are enjoying it. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

The harm of phlegm in baby's throat

Without proper treatment, sputum accumulation can easily lead to complications such as otitis media and pneumonia. The structure and function of the Eustachian tube in infants and young children are not as good as those in adults. The secretions from the nasopharynx can easily ascend to the middle ear cavity through the Eustachian tube, causing middle ear effusion or even acute otitis media, so you must be careful.

In addition, it is not uncommon for sputum to flow back into the trachea and bronchioles. In severe cases, it may even cause pneumonia: Some babies may also suffer from aspiration pneumonia due to drinking milk and coughing. If the baby does not receive proper treatment, it may cause respiratory distress, respiratory failure, and even death.

Therefore, when the baby has phlegm in the throat, parents should pay attention to the baby's breathing rate, phlegm sound and mental state, as well as whether there are other symptoms such as fever. If the baby's breathing rate changes, breathing is particularly fast or slow; or the baby's mental state is not good, coughing up yellow sputum, parents should take the baby to the hospital for treatment in time.
