Characteristics of adolescent psychological development

Characteristics of adolescent psychological development

In the past, material life was relatively scarce, and the psychological development characteristics of teenagers in the process of growing up may not be very complex. But now with the abundance of material things and the developed Internet, teenagers are exposed to more and more things, and the characteristics of their psychological development are becoming more complex. As parents, we must understand its characteristics and provide support for our children's growth. So, what are the characteristics of adolescent psychological development? Let’s take a closer look at it below.

Physiological development peak

A person's mental state is directly related to his or her physiological state. Adolescence is a golden period of physical development, while psychological development is relatively slow. The imbalance in physical and mental development leads to a special psychological state for adolescents. The more obvious phenomena are:

1. Changes in body appearance: rapid growth in height, rapid weight gain, and the head and face also develop towards adult physical characteristics. The hairline is raised.

2. Sexual development and maturity. Sexual maturity is the last stage of the human body, and it generally marks the completion of human physiological development. During adolescence, sexual organs develop significantly and secondary sexual characteristics appear.

Sexual Awakening

As the reproductive system develops, sexual organs gradually mature, accompanied by a gradual awakening of sexual awareness. Teenagers begin to develop an interest in the opposite sex and want to get closer to them, but due to shyness and social factors, the distance between the two sexes widens. The situation improves after entering high school.

The paradox of psychological development

The psychological development of adolescents cannot keep up with the pace of physical development, resulting in an imbalance in physical and mental development. Their physical maturity gives them a strong sense of adulthood, but their psychological development remains largely at the child level and is in a semi-mature state. The more common manifestations are: rebelliousness and dependence, closedness and openness, bravery and cowardice, denying childhood and being nostalgic for childhood, and a psychology full of contradictions.

Social development during adolescence

1. Development of self-awareness. Teenagers begin to pay close attention to their appearance and body shape; they are very concerned about their learning ability and grades, believing that these are their own value; they value their own personality development and want to highlight their own personality.

2. Emotional instability, often difficult to control, easily agitated, and often experiencing negative emotions such as depression and frustration.
