How much sleep does a 17 month old baby need?

Sleep is very important for babies, because babies are young and are in a stage of rapid development, and development takes place during sleep, so sleep plays a significant role for babies. The sleep time of babies of different ages is different. Parents should understand this so that they can take better care of their babies. The following will introduce how much sleep time a 17-month-old baby should have.

Some sleep more, some sleep less. The normal amount of sleep required by children per day is as follows: newborn to 2 months: 20 hours, 2 to 4 months: 16 to 18 hours, 4 to 9 months: 15 to 16 hours, 9 to 12 months: 14 to 15 hours, 12 to 15 months: 13 to 14 hours, 15 months to 2 years: 13 hours, 2 to 3 years: 12.5 hours, 3 to 5 years: 12 hours.

Baby sleep tips:

1. Baby's sleeping position

It is best for babies to sleep on their backs, which is a safer position. Also, do not let your baby sleep on his stomach to avoid suffocation. Usually, you can let your baby lie on his stomach for a while when he is awake, which is beneficial to his development.

2. Try not to let your baby sleep between mom and dad

When the baby sleeps between mom and dad, it is easy for the baby's mouth and nose to be blocked by mom and dad's clothes, causing suffocation. If the baby is still young and mom or dad does not wake him up from sleep, the risk of suffocation will be increased.

If both mom and dad sleep facing the baby, the baby will inhale too much carbon dioxide, which will affect the baby's development. It is best to let the baby sleep against the wall or let the baby sleep alone in a crib.

3. Try not to sleep with your baby

Although letting the older baby and the younger baby sleep together can enhance the relationship between them, the older baby is still a child who doesn't know anything and can't take care of the younger baby when he sleeps. There is even a risk that the younger baby may be squeezed or suffocated by the older baby. So it is better to wait until the younger baby grows up a little before letting them sleep together.

4. Baby Crib

You should choose a crib that meets safety standards, for example the mattress should fit perfectly, without any gaps or being too large. The gap between the fences should be less than 6cm, the mattress should be of moderate hardness and thickness should generally not exceed 3cm, etc.

5. Sleeping environment

There should be no dangerous objects around the baby's sleep area, and do not pile up too many stuffed toys. Try to avoid using quilts that are prone to hair loss or contain chemical fibers to prevent the baby from having respiratory allergies.

Do not turn on the night light when sleeping at night to avoid affecting the baby's vision and the formation of melatonin, which will affect the baby's development. Do not deliberately create an overly quiet environment for your baby, to avoid the baby having difficulty falling asleep in a new environment in the future.

6. Keep warm

Don't let your baby wear too many clothes when sleeping, let alone tight clothes. I recommend wearing loose cotton long-sleeved clothes and trousers. Do not use too thick or too many quilts to prevent your baby from overheating and causing febrile convulsions or suffocation.

Try not to cover your baby's head with a towel. If you are afraid that your baby will catch a cold and must wear a hat or cover him/her with something, then when your baby is asleep, it is best to always pay attention to the baby's condition, check on the baby frequently, and do not be careless and let the baby sleep alone in the room.
