Baby feels phlegm in throat when feeding

Baby feels phlegm in throat when feeding

We all know that when mothers feed their newborns, they are very particular about posture, because the correct posture can make the baby full without choking. But sometimes, because the mother's milk is sufficient, the baby will choke when drinking. It may also be because the baby has phlegm in his throat. So what should I do if the baby feels phlegm in his throat when feeding?

1. Normal physiological phenomenon

Newborn babies have underdeveloped laryngeal cartilages and are still relatively soft, so they may experience phlegm stuck in their throats, especially when they are eating, drinking, or sleeping. This phenomenon will usually disappear automatically after 3-6 months. If this condition still occurs when your baby is 6 months old, you should go to the hospital for examination to avoid more serious situations.

2. Nasal blockage

The baby's small glands secrete vigorously, especially the nasal secretions. If they are not cleaned in time, the nasal cavity will be blocked by nasal mucus. Therefore, when the baby is feeding, you can hear the sound of phlegm stuck, which usually disappears after the baby is 2 months old.

3. Respiratory tract infection

Respiratory tract infections in babies are more common in the dry autumn and winter seasons because babies have relatively low resistance and cannot adapt to the external environment all of a sudden. Coupled with the dry air, they can easily get angry, causing respiratory tract infections or even pneumonia.

4. Congenital laryngomalacia

Congenital laryngomalacia is caused by calcium deficiency, mainly because the mother does not consume enough calcium during pregnancy, which causes calcium deficiency in the baby after birth. Due to the softening of the laryngeal cartilage, the laryngeal cartilage collapses during inhalation, causing partial obstruction of the airway and the sound of phlegm sticking. Because the laryngeal cartilage softens and covers the larynx, causing obstructive breathing difficulties, the baby is forced to inhale and chokes on milk, which can lead to bronchopneumonia.

When the baby makes phlegm sounds while drinking milk, we should pay more attention to observe whether it is the situations mentioned above. When we discover such a situation, we must find a solution in time and control the symptoms as soon as possible. Since babies cannot express their discomfort well, parents need to observe carefully to discover abnormalities.
