Adverse reactions to the first injection of pentavalent combination

Adverse reactions to the first injection of pentavalent combination

Children have poor body resistance and are easily attacked by some diseases. The best way to prevent them is through vaccination. The pentavalent vaccine is a combination vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, and Haemophilus influenzae. There will be some adverse reactions when the first shot of the pentavalent vaccine is given, which is what worries parents. So, what are the adverse reactions of the first injection of the pentavalent drug? Let’s take a look below.

Adverse reactions to pentavalent vaccine

The most common adverse reaction is fever or local redness and swelling after vaccination, which can be relieved by drinking more water and applying local hot compresses (hot compresses cannot be used for nodules caused by BCG), and usually recovers on its own after 1 to 2 days. You can also apply thinly sliced potatoes to the red and swollen areas (although there is no clear evidence that this method is effective). If the situation becomes serious, you should notify the vaccination unit in time and go to a medical institution for symptomatic treatment.

If the baby has an allergic constitution, he can still be vaccinated. Close observation should be made after vaccination. If there are allergic symptoms, timely symptomatic treatment will generally not affect health. People who experience severe allergic reactions after vaccination should generally avoid receiving the same vaccine again. For more serious allergies, prevention is better than cure. In China, medical observation for 30 minutes is required after all vaccinations. We should not think that this is a waste of time. All vaccination clinics are required to have epinephrine on hand for treating severe allergies. The "Vaccination Work Specifications" also provide operational guidelines on how to treat severe allergies. If a child has a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine, these 30 minutes are the best time for rescue.

Advantages and disadvantages of pentavalent vaccine

Advantage 1: Fewer vaccinations required. If these five vaccines are taken normally, a total of 12 shots are needed, but the pentavalent vaccine only requires 4 shots. The 8 fewer shots are really substantial.

Advantage 2: Greater security. The pentavalent vaccine formulation uses fewer preservatives than all previous injections combined, which means that impurities can be greatly reduced, thereby reducing the possibility of adverse reactions.

Disadvantage 1: Expensive. The cost of the pentavalent vaccine varies from place to place, but generally one shot is around 600-800 yuan, and the total cost of the pentavalent vaccine is about 3,000 yuan.

Disadvantage 2: The scope of application is smaller than before. It is possible that the vaccine recipient is allergic to one vaccine and ultimately cannot continue to receive the pentavalent vaccine.
