What should I do if my child has poor hearing?

Every parent hopes that their children will grow up healthy, but in the process of growing up, they will encounter some problems more or less. If parents find that their children have poor hearing, then it is a big problem. At this time, they should take their children to a professional hospital for examination. Through scientific examination, they can find the root cause of the child’s poor hearing, and then adopt scientific treatment methods.

What should I do if my child has poor hearing?

If you suddenly find that your child has poor hearing, you should take him to a regular hospital in time and tell the doctor in detail whether your child has suffered any recent trauma, has a cold, or whether water has entered his ears while swimming or bathing. A preliminary examination in the outpatient clinic can reveal diseases such as "earwax embolism (brown lumps formed by long-term accumulation of ear canal secretions and debris)", "otitis externa", "otitis media", and "foreign bodies in the external auditory canal". If necessary

The following examinations are needed to clarify the nature and degree of deafness and the possible causes of deafness: 1. Temporal bone CT: to see whether the inner and middle ear are malformed, whether there is otitis media, external ear lesions, etc.; 2. Hearing test: acoustic impedance, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem evoked potential threshold, 40HZ related potential threshold, steady-state evoked potential, bone conduction ABR can distinguish between conductive deafness and sensorineural deafness); 3. There is also a genetic examination: deafness gene detection.

Only by knowing the nature and cause of deafness can we decide on a treatment plan. Conductive deafness can usually be treated surgically to improve hearing! Drug treatment for sensorineural hearing loss is currently basically ineffective, and hearing aids are a commonly used method. If hearing aids are not effective for bilateral severe or profound sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear implants may be considered.

If a child has poor hearing, a hearing test should be conducted to determine the extent and nature of the hearing loss. If the child cannot be cured by medical means, it is important to go to a professional hearing aid fitting center as soon as possible to choose hearing aids for improvement.

Infants and young children with hearing loss of 35dB should wear hearing aids. Otherwise, their language and intellectual development may be slower than normal children. If a child's hearing loss is above 60dB, not wearing a hearing aid may cause speech and intellectual barriers. Even if a child's hearing loss reaches 110-120dB, they should be equipped with appropriate hearing aids or have an artificial cochlear implant as soon as possible before they are 6 months old. This will bring great help to them throughout their lives.
