Do children with myopia need to wear glasses?

Do children with myopia need to wear glasses?

Due to improper use of eyes, many children have already developed myopia. Children are naturally active, and although ordinary glasses can correct children's vision while wearing them, they are also prone to danger, such as children accidentally getting scratched by the lenses while exercising. Therefore, many parents start to hesitate when considering this aspect. Should children with myopia wear glasses?

Many people agree that as soon as you put on your glasses, the lenses will get thicker. Therefore, some parents would rather their children look at people with squinted eyes than let them wear glasses. It is indeed not uncommon for children's myopia to worsen after wearing glasses. But is the deepening of myopia caused by wearing glasses? What effect will it have on vision if you don't wear glasses after becoming myopic?

Question 1: Does not wearing glasses affect vision?

Ms. Huang felt that her fifth-grade daughter Xiaoyue had been acting a little abnormal recently. She always squinted when looking at things. When she asked her why she always squinted, she refused to tell her. Helpless, Ms. Huang dragged Xiaoyue to the hospital's ophthalmology department to have her eyesight checked. After a medical eye examination, it was confirmed that Xiaoyue was suffering from myopia. She often squints because she cannot see things clearly.

The doctor recommended that the child get glasses.

The cute and beautiful Xiaoyue refused to agree. She had received a lot of praise for her big eyes since she was a child. How could big eyes be hidden behind lenses? For those children who are already nearsighted, not wearing glasses in time will affect their visual development. When you can't see things clearly, squinting and looking hard will cause excessive fatigue of the muscles inside and outside the eyes, which will accelerate the development of myopia. Some information shows that wearing glasses can protect eyesight to a certain extent and prevent vision from deteriorating so quickly. Therefore, if children do not want their myopia to worsen too quickly, it is better for them to wear glasses of appropriate degree in time.

At the same time, experts remind that some children have poor eyesight, and it is not ruled out that they may have pseudomyopia. Pseudomyopia is a short-term vision loss caused by long-term improper use of the eyes. If this happens, you should go to the hospital for medical treatment in time to prevent pseudomyopia from becoming true myopia. However, the proportion of people suffering from pseudomyopia is not large. Many parents think that their children's low myopia is pseudomyopia, and they do not pay attention to letting their children wear glasses, which will instead worsen their children's myopia.

Question 2: Do glasses become more powerful the more you wear them?

Is this statement scientific? Children with myopia become more and more myopic, and it is not caused by wearing glasses. Children and adolescents are in the development stage, and their eyeballs will grow longer as they age, just like their bodies, so myopia will gradually worsen. This is why many children's glasses become thicker as they wear more. When people reach the age of 16, their growth and development slows down, and the increase in myopia also slows down. Only when people reach the age of 18 and become adults, their myopia will stabilize.

Wearing glasses can correct defects in the eye's refractive system for children and adolescents with myopia, improve vision, and facilitate daily study and life, but don't think that everything will be fine just by wearing glasses. Myopia is a development process. In addition to genetic factors, if you do not pay attention to eye hygiene, the degree of myopia will worsen faster.

As for why many people cannot take off their glasses after putting them on, experts explain that this is because once children put on glasses, the things they see suddenly become clear from blurry. After getting used to this clarity, they are reluctant to take off their glasses and return to their original state.
