Children have a fever and the palms and soles of their feet are hot. This method can be used to reduce the temperature

Fever is a common disease in babies in daily life. Generally, there are many reasons for baby's fever. It may be caused by inflammation of the child's tonsils. The rapid weather changes can easily cause children to catch colds and cause fever. If the child's palms and soles are hot, you can first reduce the fever through physical cooling. You can first use cold compress method, put a cold water towel on the child's forehead to cool down.

Physical cooling for baby's fever

1. Cold wet compress on the head: Soak a soft towel in 20℃ - 30℃ cold water, squeeze it slightly to prevent dripping, fold it and place it on the forehead, change it every 3-5 minutes.

2. Wipe with warm water or take a warm bath: Wipe the child's head, armpits, limbs with a warm, wet towel or take a warm bath, scrub the skin more to promote heat dissipation.

3. Ice compress: You can use a small amount of ice compress appropriately, and apply ice or cold compress to the baby's forehead, both sides of the neck, armpits, groin and other large blood vessels. But be sure to wrap a layer of cloth around the ice bag to prevent local frostbite on the baby's skin, and babies under 6 months old should not be given ice compresses. There is still much controversy about the pros and cons of this approach. It is generally believed that ice compresses do more harm than good, because they may cause the capillaries in the baby's skin to contract, hindering heat dissipation and causing the body temperature to be higher. Especially if accompanied by chills or shivering, ice compresses should not be used.

4. Alcohol bath: This method has been abandoned. Babies' skin is very thin and alcohol is highly permeable, so it may be absorbed into the blood through the skin. Moreover, alcohol baths can also irritate the skin, causing capillaries to contract, hindering heat dissipation, and causing the body temperature to be higher.

5. Drink plenty of water and don’t take any medicine casually. When the fever is high, breathing speeds up and sweating causes the body to lose a lot of water. Therefore, parents should give their children plenty of water when they have a fever, increase urine volume, and promote the excretion of toxins in the body.

It is generally not advisable to use drugs to reduce fever in neonates; for fever caused by general infections in infants and young children, it is best to use appropriate physical cooling measures first. However, it is not advisable to use cold compresses and alcohol baths to cool down children with rash diseases such as measles, so as to avoid irritating the skin and affecting the outbreak of the rash.

What causes fever in children?

1. External factors: Children's body temperature is affected by the external environment, such as wearing too many clothes when it is hot, drinking too little water, and poor ventilation in the room.

2. Internal factors: illness, cold, tracheitis, sore throat or other diseases.

3. Other factors: such as preventive injections, including measles, cholera, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and other reactions.

Fever is only one symptom of the disease, not all of it. Parents should not blindly seek to reduce fever or treat fever symptoms, but should follow the doctor's advice, accurately find out the real cause of the fever, and prescribe the right medicine.
