How to treat acute laryngitis in children

A sore throat is a precursor to a cold for adults and is also a sign of an attack in children. However, since many children are young and cannot speak, parents need to judge whether their children have a sore throat by the sound of their voices, coughing, and their aversion to food. Most cases of acute laryngitis in children will cause sore throats and require treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, and the condition should be monitored at all times.

Treatment

General treatment is the same as for acute laryngitis in adults. The main points are:

(1) Give adequate doses of antibiotics (penicillin, cephalosporin) systemically.

(ii) For those with mild breathing difficulties, hormone preparations should be added: prednisone 1-2 mg/kg/day, taken orally. If the condition worsens, dexamethasone 0.2 mg/kg/day should be given intravenously; hydrocortisone 4-8 mg/kg/day, and oxygen inhalation and appropriate sedatives should be given at the same time. If hormone infusion is ineffective for 1-2 hours, tracheotomy should be considered.

(3) Morphine and atropine-type drugs are prohibited to avoid suppressing breathing and drying up the respiratory mucosa.

Diet and health care

Eat more fruits and dried fruits such as pears, raw radishes, and plums to enhance the maintenance function of the throat.
