Reasons for mental retardation, seven questions to warn you

Every child is the hope of a family and even the entire society, but if a child shows intellectual retardation, it will not only fail to bring hope but will also become a burden. In fact, children’s intellectual disability is related to many factors. Sad mothers should not put the blame on themselves. So what are the reasons?

1. Brain injury. Intellectual disabilities in children caused by brain injury may be caused by brain damage (for example, a car accident) or by external stimulation.

2. Genetic factors . Relevant research shows that genetic factors are one of the main causes of severe mental retardation. Just like children whose parents suffer from dwarfism, their children's intelligence will also be affected by their parents.

3. Infection during pregnancy. Infection during pregnancy is another major pathogenic factor leading to intellectual disability in children, especially infections in the first three months of pregnancy have the greatest impact; in addition, malnutrition during pregnancy is one of the main causes of intrauterine fetal growth retardation.

4. Viral infection. This infection that causes intellectual disability in children includes meningitis, encephalitis, head trauma, cerebrovascular accident, toxic encephalopathy, endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism, epilepsy, etc.

5. Chromosome abnormality . The chromosomal factor in childhood intellectual disability may be due to chromosomal abnormalities;

6. Social and psychological factors : These children do not have organic brain lesions. Their condition is mainly caused by adverse environmental factors such as neuropsychological damage and sensory deprivation, such as severe lack of appropriate early stimulation and education. Hence the mental retardation.

7. Metabolic, nutritional and endocrine diseases: Metabolic disorders of amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, mucopolysaccharides, purines and other substances in the body can affect the development and function of nerve cells, such as phenylketonuria and galactosemia. Insufficient nutrition before and after birth, especially lack of protein, iron and other substances, will cause a reduction in the number of brain cells in the fetus or infant or impair their function.
