What causes dry eyes in children?

Children's eyesight problems are very important issues, because some children do not pay attention to maintaining their eyesight when they are young. Especially nowadays, with the rich variety of electronic products, children will inevitably be attracted to electronic products, so they will have the habit of watching computers and TV frequently. This preference is caused by parents. So children's eyes may also have some problems. Some children have dry eyes. So what is the problem with dry eyes in children?

Let’s take a look below.

What causes dry eyes in children? Dry eye syndrome is a general term for a variety of diseases characterized by abnormal tear quality, quantity, or dynamics due to any reason, which leads to decreased tear film stability and is accompanied by eye discomfort and/or ocular surface tissue lesions. Also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Common symptoms include dry eyes, easy fatigue, itchy eyes, foreign body sensation, burning pain, sticky secretions, fear of wind, fear of light, and sensitivity to external stimuli. Sometimes the eyes are too dry and the basic tears are insufficient, which stimulates reflex tear secretion and causes frequent tears. In more serious cases, the eyes will be red, swollen, congested, keratinized, and the corneal epithelium will be broken with filaments attached. This damage can cause corneal and conjunctival lesions over time and affect vision.

What causes dry eyes in children? Normally, the tear points are immersed in the tear lake and touch the bulbar conjunctiva. Even if the patient looks up, the lower tear points will not be seen without opening the lower eyelid. This close contact is a prerequisite for maintaining normal tear absorption function. The location of the lacrimal puncta can be observed through visual examination. Even though the tear ducts are well flushed, it is difficult to divert tears, which causes tearing in the wind. There are many causes of lower lacrimal punctum ectropion, such as congenital abnormalities, scar ectropion, senile eyelid skin relaxation, and facial nerve paralysis. Especially very mild facial nerve paralysis is often overlooked, and it can be discovered by asking the patient to smile.

The above is about why children have dry eyes. Some children have windy eyes, which means tears flow in the wind. Then this situation needs treatment. Of course, some children have bad living habits, such as watching TV frequently, or reading under dim light, etc. These are bad habits that need to be corrected.
