How to give first aid to babies with fever and cramps

We all know that cramps are painful, of course this is true for adults, but for children cramps are even more painful and uncomfortable, and relatively dangerous. Many times, after a child has a fever or when the fever reaches a certain degree, some babies will have cramps. This is quite worrying for us because we don’t know how to deal with it. So how do we provide first aid for babies with fever and cramps? Let’s learn more about it!

Children often experience cramps when they have a high fever, especially those between 6 months and 4 years old. This is because the child's brain function is not yet fully developed. Cramps usually occur within 6 hours after a high fever, and manifest as sudden whole-body twitching in children, with muscles in the hands, feet, and face being particularly noticeable.

1. Keep the airway open. Because spasms in the throat muscles during cramps often lead to airway obstruction, keeping the airway open is the key to rescue. The specific method is to quickly tilt the child's head back and to one side, and loosen the clothing around the neck.

2. Stop fright. Use your fingertips to press and stimulate the philtrum (below the nose, in the middle of the upper lip) for 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to press with your fingernails to avoid damaging the child's skin.

3. Wrap chopsticks with clean gauze and place them between the child's upper and lower teeth to keep the airway open, prevent tongue bites, and prevent saliva and vomit from flowing back into the trachea, so as to avoid suffocation or aspiration pneumonia.

4. Cool down. Use a cold towel or 70% alcohol plus an equal amount of water to gently wipe the child's armpits, thighs, neck or behind the knees to quickly lower the body temperature.

5. After the cramps stop, children should be given plenty of water to drink to prevent excessive sweating and collapse when the fever subsides. After the above treatment, the child should be sent to the hospital for further examination and treatment.

Now we have solved the problem of how to provide first aid when a baby has a fever and convulsions. This really solves a big problem for parents, because many parents are young and inexperienced, and they don’t know how to deal with such things. However, we should still learn more about first aid knowledge so that we can provide treatment in advance if we encounter any situation.
