What is going on when the baby has a fever and convulsions?

Now the baby in every family is a little sun, and everyone hopes that their baby can be healthy, because the baby is the apple of the parents' eyes. Only when the baby is healthy, the parents will be in a good mood. The mood of parents changes according to the situation of the child. Many parents will be sad when they see their children sick. They will be sad for a long time and lose their appetite. The most common symptom is fever. So what is the matter with the baby having a fever and convulsions? Let’s learn more about it!

Febrile convulsions are common emergencies in children and are characterized by sudden onset of generalized or localized muscle rigidity and clonic convulsions. High fever convulsions are often accompanied by impaired consciousness.

The incidence of convulsions in children is 10 times that of adults, especially in infants and young children. The causes of childhood convulsions can be divided into two categories: infectious (febrile convulsions) and non-infectious (afebrile convulsions) according to the presence or absence of infection.

According to the site of involvement of the lesion, it is divided into intracranial and extracranial types. It is usually an infectious convulsion.

1. Intracranial diseases and viral infections such as viral encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis. Bacterial infections such as purulent meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, brain abscess, and venous sinus thrombosis. Fungal infections such as cryptococcal meningitis. Parasitic infections such as cerebral cysticercosis, cerebral malaria, cerebral schistosomiasis, cerebral paragonimiasis, and toxoplasmosis.

2. Extracranial diseases include high fever convulsions, toxic encephalopathy (severe pneumonia, whooping cough, toxic dysentery, sepsis as primary diseases), tetanus, etc. A febrile seizure in a child may stop on its own without any medical attention. If the seizure does not stop within 5 minutes, the child should be taken to a doctor immediately. Although a high fever is often caused by a viral infection, doctors still need to examine the child and sometimes do blood tests to find the true cause of the high fever.

Now we have an understanding of what causes a baby to have a fever and convulsions. In fact, every baby is the hope of its parents and the family. We all want our babies to be healthy. If the baby is not feeling well, parents should not always be sad. Solving the problem is the most important thing. If you can’t handle it at home, go to the hospital immediately and don’t delay the child’s illness.
