What are the causes of athetoid cerebral palsy in children?

For a family, if they find that their newborn baby has cerebral palsy, it will be a huge blow to the entire family. Cerebral palsy in children is a very common disease of the brain tissue, which is mostly congenital. There are many reasons that can induce cerebral palsy in children. Some are due to incomplete brain development before birth, and some are due to infection at birth. Today I will introduce to you the causes of athetoid cerebral palsy in children.

1. Causes before birth

1. Abnormal brain development during the embryonic period, such as cerebellar malformation, congenital hydrocephalus or aencephaly and other congenital malformations.

2. Trauma, severe infection, preeclampsia, diabetes, and radiation exposure to the mother during pregnancy can affect the fetal brain development and cause permanent brain damage.

3. If the mother suffers from rubella, herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus inclusion disease, toxoplasmosis, etc. in early pregnancy, the central nervous system of the fetus may be damaged and become ill.

4. Premature babies.

5. Post-term babies and placental degeneration and necrosis can cause hypoxemia and fetal brain hypoxia just like premature babies.

6. Genetic defects, congenital genetic diseases in family members or immediate family members.

7. Other situations, such as parents’ inhalation, alcoholism, anemia, long-term medication, etc.

2. Causes at birth

1. Fetal brain hypoxia, long delivery time, and the use of anesthetics and sedatives before delivery can all inhibit fetal breathing, causing gas exchange disorders, umbilical cord around the neck, placental abruption, and placenta previa, all of which can cause fetal brain hypoxia. About 30% of these children have a history of neonatal asphyxia.

2. Cerebral hemorrhage, birth trauma, premature delivery, difficult labor, and hemorrhagic diseases can all cause intracranial hemorrhage. About 15% of these children have seizures in the neonatal period.

3. Kernicterus, caused by neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, is the cause of athetoid cerebral palsy.

What are the causes of athetoid cerebral palsy in children? The above is an introduction to some of the causes, so women must pay attention to protecting themselves during pregnancy, not getting sick, and not taking medications, otherwise the fetus may be infected by drugs. They must also go to a professional hospital for delivery.
