Treatment for hypothyroidism in children

Every mother wants her child to grow up healthy and strong, but nowadays many children suffer from hypothyroidism. This situation is very serious. Every mother attaches great importance to it and takes effective methods to treat it in time. Many people may not have a clear understanding of the treatment methods for children's hypothyroidism. Let us learn about the treatment methods for children's hypothyroidism.

1. General treatment. Adolescent goiter may disappear on its own. Adults need 1 to 3 mg/kg of iodine per day, so they should eat more seafood or iodine-rich foods.

2. Alternative treatment. The daily dose of thyroid tablets is 60 to 180 mg, and the course of treatment is 3 to 6 months. The dosage should be adjusted to maintain the basal metabolic rate within the normal range, the thyroid iodine uptake rate of about 10% in 24 hours, and the thyroid gland shrinking.

3. Supplement iodine. For endemic cases, take 10-15 mg of potassium iodide daily; or 2-3 drops of compound iodine solution (Lugol's iodine) daily, take it for 1 month and then take it again after 10 days; or 2-6 iodine sugar pills daily; or 10 ml of iodized oil, once every 2 years. For patients with nodules, the amount of iodine supplementation should be small to prevent the induction of hyperthyroidism. Iodine supplementation is not recommended for patients with multiple nodules and middle-aged and elderly patients.

4. Surgical treatment. Symptoms caused by compression of the trachea, esophagus or recurrent laryngeal nerve; retrosternal goiter; huge goiter affecting life and work; nodular goiter leading to secondary hyperfunction; nodular goiter suspected of malignant transformation should be treated with surgery in a timely manner. Subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. It is advisable to take thyroid tablets for a long time after surgery to prevent goiter and postoperative hypothyroidism.

5. During TCM treatment, the disease is divided into several types based on symptoms and pulse, and then treatment is carried out based on syndrome differentiation. Symptoms include diffuse symmetrical swelling in the front of the neck, which is smooth and soft with unclear edges. Patients with long-term illness may have nodules. Patients with larger cysts may have compression symptoms such as chest tightness, cough, and difficulty swallowing, and their tongue coating is thin and white. A stringy pulse indicates qi stagnation and phlegm obstruction. It is suitable to be treated with the methods of regulating qi and resolving phlegm, eliminating goiter and dispersing nodules. Reference prescriptions: 15 grams each of kelp, cuttlebone, sea clam shell, and salvia miltiorrhiza, and 10 grams each of trichosanthes, seaweed, kelp, atractylodes rhizome, and curcuma. Tangerine peel and Cyperus rotundus 9 grams. Symptoms include a lump in the front of the neck that is biased to one side, is hard and has nodules, causes chest tightness and shortness of breath, cough with little sputum, and has a thin yellow tongue coating. A stringy and slippery pulse indicates the phlegm and blood stasis type. It is suitable to treat with the methods of regulating qi and resolving phlegm, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and softening and dispersing nodules. Reference prescriptions: 15 grams each of seaweed and kelp, 10 grams each of green peel, tangerine peel, Fritillaria thunbergii, and Pinellia ternata, 15 grams of Forsythia suspensa, 10 grams of Angelica sinensis, 10 grams of Chuanxiong, and 6 grams of licorice.
