Why does my baby keep drooling?

Children's health is something that every family attaches great importance to. Once the baby has any abnormal situation, parents will feel worried. Many babies drool constantly, which makes their parents feel confused. So, why does the baby keep drooling? For parents’ questions, please see the specific answers below.

It is normal for babies to drool before the age of two.

The salivary glands of babies aged 3 to 4 months old gradually mature and the amount of saliva secretion increases. However, the child's ability to swallow saliva is not yet fully developed, the oral cavity is shallow, and the lip closure and swallowing movements are not coordinated, resulting in frequent drooling. When the child is 6 to 7 months old, the erupting teeth stimulate the nerves in the mouth, causing a large amount of saliva to be secreted, and the child will flow more saliva. As the baby grows and develops, children who develop faster will stop drooling when they are one and a half years old, and most children will gradually and effectively control their swallowing movements before the age of two as their muscle motor functions mature. Therefore, it is normal for babies to drool.

Since saliva is acidic, it contains digestive enzymes and other substances, and the oral mucosa protects it from invading the deeper layers. However, when saliva flows onto the skin, it can easily corrode the outermost stratum corneum of the skin, causing skin inflammation and pediatric skin diseases such as eczema. Therefore, when your baby drools, you should pay attention to the following points:

1. Wipe off his saliva at any time. Do not use force when wiping. Just wipe the saliva gently to avoid damaging the local skin.

2. Wash the areas where saliva flows frequently with warm water, and then apply oil to protect the skin of the chin and neck.

3. The handkerchief used to wipe the baby's saliva should be soft, preferably made of cotton, and should be ironed and washed frequently.

4. If the baby drools severely, go to the hospital for a check-up to see if there are any abnormal symptoms in the baby's mouth and whether the swallowing function is normal.

Why does my baby keep drooling? If the baby is under two years old, this situation is very normal and parents don't need to worry too much. As the baby continues to grow, this situation will be greatly improved. When the child is drooling, be sure to wipe the child gently and do not hurt the child's skin.
