What causes deafness in children?

Many people have the habit of cleaning their ears frequently. When children complain that their ears are itchy, many parents will just pick up a hairpin and let them clean their ears. However, this method of cleaning ears is very dangerous. If someone nearby bumps into it, it may cause the child to become deaf and cause lifelong hearing damage. So what other situations do we need to pay attention to in order to avoid causing deafness in children? The editor will explain it to you below.

Deafness is a general term for varying degrees of hearing impairment caused by organic or functional lesions in the auditory conduction pathway. Deafness is one of the most important issues affecting the quality of human life. There are many types of deafness. The most commonly used classification method now is to divide it into conductive deafness, sensorineural deafness and mixed deafness according to the location of the deafness.

There are many factors that cause children's deafness, which can be summarized into four types: hereditary, drug-related, disease-related and lifestyle-related.

1. Hereditary

People with a family history of the disease are at risk of developing hereditary deafness. In addition, some improper behaviors of expectant mothers during pregnancy can also lead to congenital deafness in the child.

2. Drug-related

In our country, 20,000 to 30,000 children become deaf and dumb every year due to injections and medication. Drug-induced deafness is preventable. During pregnancy, mothers should avoid taking certain drugs that may damage the fetus' inner ear. People with a family history of drug-induced deafness should be especially cautious when using drugs. If they must use them, they should start with the smallest dose. When ototoxic drugs must be used, close observation should be made, especially paying attention to whether there are phenomena such as tinnitus and dizziness, so as to achieve early detection and early measures.

3. Disease

Some acquired deafness is related to neonatal asphyxia, neonatal hemolysis, and birth trauma during the delivery process.

Many children become deaf due to parental neglect. Childhood is the best period for hearing and speech development. Therefore, as parents, we must be very careful and pay attention to the health and safety of our children. When children are exposed to noise for a long time, parents should give them earplugs to protect their hearing or take them away from the source of pollution.
