What should I do if my child’s eyes are red and swollen?

Whenever I see my child’s eyes become red and swollen, I feel particularly distressed. Because it is difficult for children to express their physical discomfort clearly when they are young. And it will easily cause more inner pain. This is the most tormenting time for parents, so what is the best way to relieve the stress for children at this time? Let’s take a look together.

1. Apply local hot compress to promote suppuration. Mild inflammation can also disappear completely after hot compress.

2. Systemic and local antibiotic treatment can promote the disappearance of inflammation. Penicillin antibiotics can be taken orally, injected intramuscularly or intravenously, and they are very effective against pyogenic bacteria. Eye drops can be applied topically, generally 0.25% chloramphenicol eye drops are sufficient. If there is a lot of secretion, rifampicin eye drops can be used for better results. Children can apply chloramphenicol eye ointment after falling asleep.

Make an incision and drain the pus instead of waiting for it to burst on its own. This can reduce the patient's pain and shorten the treatment period.

3. When pus appears, do not squeeze it with your hands, because the eyelids are rich in blood vessels, the ocular veins are connected to the veins in the orbit, and the ocular veins have no venous valves. Blood can flow back in all directions. Squeezing it will spread the inflammation and cause serious complications, such as orbital cellulitis or even sepsis, which is life-threatening. Do not rub your eyes with dirty hands to avoid bringing bacteria into the eyes and causing infection.

4. It is very effective to wipe the roots of eyelashes with an alcohol cotton ball. The method is: when the disease begins - eyelid itching, redness, swelling or pain appear, immediately wipe the eyelashes with an alcohol cotton ball. Keep your eyes closed when wiping, and gently rub the roots of your eyelashes back and forth with an alcohol cotton ball. Your eyes will feel warm after rubbing. Do not open your eyes when you have a fever. Wait until the fever subsides before opening your eyes.

At this time, you must be careful not to let your child scratch his eyes with his hands, because it will easily cause the child's eyes to be infected. And it is important to note that you should clean your child's eyes frequently, which can relieve your child's discomfort. Maintain a good hygiene habit.
