Why do children keep spitting?

Why do children keep spitting?

Many mothers will ask if there is something wrong with their children who drool all the time. Generally speaking, baby drooling is a stage-specific phenomenon with a certain regularity. However, drooling at different stages also reflects different problems. Let us understand together, is baby drooling good or bad? And what are the treatment methods and care methods for babies drooling.

Less saliva within 3 months

Newborn babies do not drool because their salivary glands are underdeveloped and secrete less saliva. In addition, the baby's staple food at this time is breast milk or dairy products, which do not require salivary enzymes to participate in digestion and will not stimulate salivary gland secretion.

· Starts drooling at 4 to 6 months

Adding starchy foods such as rice flour to babies will reflexively stimulate the secretion of salivary glands, and the saliva secretion will increase significantly when the baby is 5 to 6 months old. However, the baby's oral cavity volume is relatively small, and the swallowing regulation function is not yet fully developed. The baby cannot swallow the saliva secreted in time, so saliva will flow out.

The period when drooling is most frequent is during the baby's teething period. When deciduous teeth erupt, they push out of the gums, causing mild swelling and discomfort in the gum tissue, stimulating the nerves on the gums, and also stimulating the salivary glands to reflexively increase secretion.

Stop drooling before the age of two

Most babies, before the age of two, gradually and effectively control their swallowing movements as their muscle motor functions mature, and their mouths no longer become wet. But some babies continue to drool after they are two years old.

Saliva has 6 major functions

1. Help digestion and decomposition of starchy foods;

2. Protect the baby's oral mucosa from bacteria and prevent tooth decay;

3. Stimulate the development of taste buds and improve baby's appetite;

4. Keep the mouth moist and maintain the cleanliness of the mouth and teeth;

5. It is beneficial to the movement of lips and tongue, and helps the development of language functions such as pronunciation and speaking;

6. It is beneficial to improve the baby's swallowing function.

worry

Causes and disadvantages of excessive saliva

reason:

· Exuberant glandular secretion;

·Slow development of swallowing function;

Frequent food stimulation;

Oral diseases, including stomatitis, glossitis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis of various causes;

In addition, in a few babies, excessive drooling may be related to brain development disorders or diseases, such as congenital cerebral dysplasia, congenital idiocy, encephalitis or sequelae of meningitis.

Disadvantages:

The appearance is dirty and unattractive;

Saliva is acidic and contains some corrosive digestive enzymes. So when saliva flows to the corners of the mouth, face, neck, and even the chest skin, it is easy to corrode the outermost stratum corneum of the skin, or cause fungal infection due to moisture, resulting in skin diseases such as redness or eczema.

Nursing points

·Wipe away the baby's saliva at any time. Do not use force when rubbing to avoid damaging the local skin. When wiping saliva, it is best to use a soft, absorbent cotton handkerchief or towel. Used handkerchiefs should be washed and ironed frequently. Try to avoid wiping your baby's face with perfumed wet wipes to avoid irritating the skin.

· Wash away saliva with warm water frequently, then apply oil to protect the skin.

Put a bib on your baby to prevent saliva from staining his clothes. Keep the bib clean and dry so your baby will feel comfortable and happy using it.

·Babies’ clothes, pillows, and bedding are often contaminated by saliva, so they should be washed and dried frequently to avoid the growth of bacteria.

Babies over 4 months old should be fed starchy complementary foods in time to exercise their chewing and swallowing abilities.

Use a pacifier to train your baby's sucking ability. However, it is recommended that mothers try to stop using pacifiers before their babies are 1 year old to avoid affecting the development of their teeth.

If your baby has a rash or erosion on his skin, it is best to go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment and ask the doctor to give the right treatment.

Apply antibiotics or antipruritic ointment topically. It is best to apply it before the baby goes to bed or while the baby is sleeping to prevent the baby from accidentally swallowing it and affecting health.

Two anti-saliva dietary recipes

1. 100 grams of red beans and 500 grams of fresh carp. Boil the red beans and take out the soup. Wash the carp and remove the internal organs. Cook it with the red bean soup. Add a little rice wine and simmer for an hour. Take the soup and feed it three times on an empty stomach. Take it for seven days.

2. 100 grams of coix seeds, 20 grams of raw hawthorn, and 650 milliliters of water. Simmer for one hour and take the concentrated juice three times a day on an empty stomach for seven consecutive days.

After reading this, mothers no longer have to worry about their babies drooling. Just look at the stage at which your baby is drooling, and you will naturally know the reason. Special reminder: if your baby drools particularly severely, you should go to the hospital for a check-up to see if there are any abnormal symptoms in the baby's mouth, whether the swallowing function is normal, etc.
