How to judge children's bow legs?

Many parents are worried that their children cannot close their legs and will have bow legs when they grow up. In fact, many pediatric experts now point out that the judgment of whether a child has bow legs requires preliminary judgment by parents. Now we will teach our parents how to judge whether a child has bow legs.

Let the baby lie on his back, then use both hands to gently straighten the baby's legs and bring them closer to the middle. Under normal circumstances, when the baby's legs are close together, the knee joints and ankle joints on both sides are close together. If there is a gap, it should be taken seriously and the child should be taken to the hospital for examination so as to detect problems with the baby's lower limb development as early as possible. If the gap between the bilateral knee joints and ankle joints exceeds 10 cm according to the above method, it is very likely that the child has bow legs. Parents should take the child to a doctor immediately and perform orthopedic correction treatment while treating the primary disease.

There are many reasons for babies' bow legs, such as cartilage nutritional disorders, but vitamin D deficiency rickets is the most common cause. The main symptoms in the early stages are sweating and irritability. If not corrected in time, it will affect bone development. When children with rickets grow to about one year old and learn to stand and walk, their legs find it difficult to bear the weight of the body, which causes their lower limbs to bend outward and form bow legs.

Dr. Zhang reminds parents to use scientific parenting methods to prevent the occurrence of bow legs in children. Feed properly and go outdoors more often. Because young children are in the stage of physical development, their leg strength is often not enough to bear excessive body weight, which can easily cause leg deformation. Therefore, they should not stand or learn to walk too early or for too long, and should use walkers less often. Do not wear hard leather shoes too early, because infants and young children have weak leg strength, and wearing hard shoes when learning to walk will affect the normal development of the lower limbs.

It is worth noting that some normal conditions can easily be mistaken for bow legs. Doctor Zhang said that it is a normal physiological phenomenon for infants under 6 months old to have the tibias (long bones below the knee joint) of both lower limbs bend outwards, and they will gradually straighten between 6 months and 1 year old. It is wrong for some parents to use binding to try to straighten their children's legs, because this not only fails to correct the shape of the legs, but may also affect the normal development of the child's hip joints. In addition, it is normal for a 2-year-old baby to sometimes have mild genu valgum or genu varum. Most of them can be corrected by themselves during the growth process, so there is no need to worry.

The bow legs of children need to attract the attention of parents, but don’t assume that all children with bowed legs have bow legs. Many times it is closely related to their daily habits such as calcium deficiency. Therefore, we parents need to observe carefully and provide correct treatment under the guidance of a doctor when necessary.
