Five tips for feeding premature babies

Generally speaking, we need to pay more attention to the feeding of premature babies than normal babies. When feeding premature babies, we must pay attention to feeding them in small amounts and multiple times. We must also pay attention to the feeding time, the amount of milk fed, and the supplementation of nutrients.

1. Feeding premature babies, pay attention to feeding time

The feeding time for premature babies should be determined according to the baby's weight. If the premature baby weighs more than 1.5 kg, the baby can be breastfed 24 hours after birth; if the premature baby weighs between 1-1.5 kg, the baby can be breastfed 36 hours after birth; if the premature baby weighs less than 1 kg, the baby can be breastfed 48 hours after birth.

2. Feed premature babies in small amounts and multiple times

Because the digestive function of premature babies is not fully developed and the stomach capacity is very small, but the baby still needs to meet the daily nutritional needs, mothers need to feed premature babies in small amounts and multiple times.

3. Feeding premature infants and controlling the amount of milk to be fed

Premature babies are weak and have poor digestive abilities, so it is best to feed them with breast milk. The amount of milk you feed your baby for the first time should not be too much. If the baby weighs 1.5 kg, the initial feeding amount should be about 4 ml, and then increase by 2 ml each time, up to a maximum of 16 ml per day. The specific increase or decrease should be based on the baby's weight. During the day, between feedings, a small amount of glucose water can be fed. It should be noted that after each feeding, it is best to let the baby lie on his side to avoid suffocation due to spitting up milk.

4. Feeding premature infants and supplementing nutrients

In addition to breastfeeding in the early stages, premature babies also need to supplement with some VE in a timely manner. After the baby is one month old, VA and VD can be supplemented every day. The specific amount of addition needs to be based on the baby's specific situation and follow the doctor's advice.

5. Feeding premature infants, dropper feeding method

If the premature baby does not have the ability to suck on his own, the dropper feeding method can be used. The specific method is: after sucking breast milk or cow's milk with a dropper, slowly drip it along the root of the child's tongue. The amount should be small each time, and the speed must be slow to avoid choking the baby, and pay attention to the temperature of the milk.
