Deficiency of both the heart and spleen shall be manifested by palpitations, limb fatigue, poor appetite, abdominal distension, spontaneous sweating, shortness of breath, dull complexion, pale tongue with thin coating, and thin or intermittent pulse. The treatment should be to strengthen the spleen and replenish qi, nourish the heart and calm the mind, use Guipi Decoction with modifications: Codonopsis pilosula, Atractylodes macrocephala, Astragalus membranaceus, longan meat, Poria cocos, Ziziphus jujuba seed, Polygala tenuifolia, costus root, and licorice.

Yin deficiency and excessive fire are manifested in palpitations, restlessness, hotness in the five parts of the body, dizziness, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, dreaminess, red cheeks and dry mouth. The tongue is red with little coating, and the pulse is thin, rapid or intermittent. The treatment should be to nourish yin and reduce fire, nourish the heart and calm the mind, use Tianwang Buxin Dan with modifications: raw rehmannia, angelica, salvia miltiorrhiza, Scrophularia ningpoensis, stir-fried jujube seeds, cypress seeds, Ophiopogon japonicus, Adenophora stellaria, Poria cocos, Schisandra chinensis, and Polygala tenuifolia.

Qi deficiency and blood stasis are manifested by dull or stabbing pain in the precordial area, pain in a fixed location, chest tightness and palpitations, shortness of breath and fatigue, especially when moving, dull lip color, pale tongue or with ecchymosis, and a thin, wiry and intermittent pulse. The treatment should be to invigorate Qi and promote Yang, activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis. Use Buyang Huanwu Decoction combined with Shengmai Powder with modifications: Codonopsis pilosula, Astragalus membranaceus, Salvia miltiorrhiza, peach kernel, safflower, Angelica sinensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, Chuanxiong, Paeonia lactiflora, Schisandra chinensis, and Licorice root.

Deficiency of both Yin and Yang may cause palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, pale complexion, cold limbs, loose stools, back pain, fatigue, pale tongue, thin white fur, and a deep, weak or intermittent pulse. It is suitable for warming yang and invigorating qi, nourishing yin and unblocking meridians, and using Shenfu Yangying Decoction with modifications: ginseng, aconite root, cinnamon twig, dried ginger, schisandra chinensis, raw rehmannia, angelica, white peony root, ophiopogon japonicus, adenophora ginseng, and astragalus.
