Methods to reduce jaundice in newborns

Methods to reduce jaundice in newborns

It is very common for newborns to have jaundice, but it is not necessarily pathological. All newborns will have jaundice, but if the baby is already one month old and still has jaundice, then you should seek medical attention in time, because the jaundice of a one-month-old baby should have subsided. But parents don’t need to worry too much. Here are some ways to reduce jaundice in newborns.

1) Sunbathing to treat jaundice

Using the blue and green light from the sun to treat and reduce your baby's jaundice is the most common and direct treatment method. Newborn babies are more delicate, so be sure to take protective measures when basking in the sun:

① First of all, you need to protect your baby's eyes. You can make an eye mask with black cloth at home and put it on your baby;

② To protect the external genitalia, put diapers on your baby when basking in the sun (there are special blue light diapers) for protection;

③ Use glass to sunbathe to reduce the damage of ultraviolet rays to the newborn's skin; pay attention to changing the body position each time you sunbathe, first sunbathe on your back, then turn over;

④ The total amount of sun exposure time is 2-4 hours a day;

After sunbathing, you need to feed your baby more milk or water to help the excretion of bilirubin in the baby's body.

2) Blue light treatment for jaundice

Blue light irradiation is a simple, effective and fast-acting method for treating neonatal jaundice. Through light irradiation, the bilirubin in the body can be converted into other substances, so that the bilirubin that continues to accumulate in the body can find another outlet. The symptoms of jaundice can gradually improve and eventually disappear completely.

3) Drug treatment

Oral administration of Yinzhihuang:

It has a certain effect on treating jaundice, but some children will have diarrhea after taking it. If the jaundice does not improve and the child has severe diarrhea, stop using it;

Myths about jaundice:

Can brown sugar water treat baby jaundice? Many elderly people believe that drinking brown sugar water can treat baby jaundice, and even some doctors think so. This misunderstanding stems from an enzyme: glucuronyl transferase. This enzyme is a protein and plays an important role in the metabolism of jaundice. Some doctors mistakenly believe that the glucose produced by brown sugar metabolism can increase the amount or activity of this enzyme. In fact, the enzyme is a protein and has nothing to do with glucose, so brown sugar water has almost no effect on the treatment of jaundice.

In fact, parents do not need to worry too much. Neonatal jaundice is a relatively common childhood disease and the treatment method is very simple. With the rapid development of medical technology, the treatment of neonatal jaundice has become simpler, faster, and safer, and will not bring any adverse effects on the child's growth.
