What causes newborns to spit?

Babies are the cutest when they are two or three months old, they are very chubby. But babies of this age cannot speak yet and cannot express their feelings clearly. They can only convey them through crying or laughing. Sometimes we find that babies like to drool and blow bubbles, and mothers become nervous, fearing that the baby has some disease or problem. So what is the reason why newborns spit?

After the baby is born, the nervous system begins to develop rapidly. The order of the baby's nerve development starts from the center to the periphery. Therefore, the infant's perioral nerves develop earlier than the nerves of the hands. For babies aged 1 to 5 months, the "mouth" is a tool for exploring the world. They use their mouths to explore and experience the surrounding environment. So he will stick out his tongue and lick whatever he touches. This is the baby learning!

From a psychological perspective, the period from birth to one year old is the initial stage of the development of a child’s psychological sexuality, namely the “oral stage”. The main way for infants under one year old to satisfy their various desires is through oral means (i.e. sucking, eating, drinking, and eating fingers).

Another theory is that a child's "salivation cells" are not yet developed after birth. Therefore, saliva secretion is very little. By 3-4 months, saliva secretion gradually increases, and by 5-6 months, children begin to teethe, and the eruption of teeth stimulates the trigeminal nerve. As a result, the amount of saliva in children increases. But at this time the child's mouth is shallow and he cannot swallow the excess saliva, so it flows out. If a child drools too much, be sure to wipe him/her dry with a clean soft towel at any time. And apply Vaseline. Overalls or "bibs" should be washed and changed frequently. Eczema-like lesions at the corners of the mouth can be applied with calamine lotion, eczema cream, zinc oxide ointment, etc.

When the baby reaches 7-8 months old, the erupting teeth will stimulate the nerves in the mouth, causing a large amount of saliva to be secreted, and the baby will drool more. As the baby grows older, the regulation of saliva secretion and swallowing functions will gradually improve, and the drooling phenomenon will disappear. Therefore, drooling of babies is a normal physiological phenomenon.

When we find that the child is about to spit, parents can divert the baby's attention in time. For example, when you take your baby to do something else that he is interested in, don't scold him immediately, because doing so will cause the child to rebel and further intensify his negative emotions.
