What is the reason for the baby's stool to be yellow-green?

Recently, many mothers of newborn babies have consulted me and said that their children often have yellow-green stools, but they don’t know why this is happening, nor do they know whether this is an outward manifestation of the baby’s physical discomfort. Newborn babies often have this condition, so I want to provide some help to parents who have this problem and let you know, what is the reason why the baby's stool is yellow-green?

What is the reason why baby’s stool is yellow-green? About 24 hours after birth, your baby will pass a thick, black substance called meconium. Meconium is the intestinal contents of the fetus in the uterus that must be eliminated from the body before normal digestion can begin. Later, the child's bowel movements gradually became regular and the stool became harder. As long as the baby (baby food) is healthy (healthy food), happy, and gaining weight, there is no need to pay attention to the child's bowel movements and there is no need to worry too much about the child's bowel movements. Different children have different numbers of bowel movements per day, but as children grow, the number of bowel movements will become less and less. At the beginning, the child may have 3-4 bowel movements a day. After a few weeks, the frequency of bowel movements may decrease to once every two days. This is normal. In addition, the following phenomena are also normal: thin, uneven stools; green stools; bowel movements after eating; sometimes up to 6 bowel movements per day.

What causes green stool?

(1) Green stools in breastfed babies

The color of stool is closely related to the chemical changes of bile. Bile in the upper small intestine contains bilirubin and biliverdin, which give stool its yellow-green color. When the stool is pushed into the colon, biliverdin is reduced and converted into bilirubin, and the stool becomes yellow. The stool of breastfed children is acidic. Under the action of intestinal bacteria, part of the bilirubin is converted into biliverdin, making the stool light green. This is a normal phenomenon. If the baby eats well and is in good general condition, the new mother does not need to worry. This is only a temporary phenomenon and will improve as the baby grows older.

What is the reason why baby’s stool is yellow-green? Now that we know the specific reasons, parents can prescribe the right medicine and give their babies more careful care. Parents should also be reminded that if there is something unusual in the baby's condition, they should go to the hospital for consultation and treatment as soon as possible and do not delay.
