Western medicine is effective quickly in treating nephrotic syndrome in children, but the disease is prone to relapse; on the contrary, Chinese medicine is slow to take effect, but the effect is good and there is no relapse. Generally speaking, depending on the severity of nephrotic syndrome in children, Western medicine treatment of nephrotic syndrome in children generally adopts the following treatment steps.

The most commonly used ones are nitropropiodine, captopril and propranolol. The vasodilators dopamine or phentolamine given intravenously can provide a diuretic and lower blood pressure.

Hormone therapy

1. Short-term therapy: prednisone 2 mg/kg per day, total daily amount not exceeding 60 mg, taken orally in 3 divided doses, for 4 weeks. Then take it every other day for a total of 4 weeks. If urine protein turns negative 4 weeks after the start of treatment, take the medicine every other day for 4 weeks starting from the date of turning negative, and then gradually reduce the dosage. The total treatment course is 12 weeks. This method is rarely used in China.

2. Medium and long-term therapy: a commonly used method in pediatrics in China. Prednisone is taken orally at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day, divided into 3 doses. The treatment period can be extended by 2 weeks after urine protein turns negative, and the adequate treatment duration should not exceed 8 weeks. Later, change to 2 mg/kg every other morning for 4 weeks, and then reduce the dose once every 2 weeks, reducing 5 to 10 mg each time. The total course of treatment is 9 to 12 months.
