What to do if your child has tetany?

Tetany in children is a relatively common disease. For the family members of the affected children, it is necessary to understand the relevant treatment measures for tetany in children. So what should we do about tetany in children? Next, this article will introduce what to do if children have hand and foot convulsions. Friends who want to know more about this aspect can continue reading!

1. First aid treatment

Inhale oxygen to ensure a patent airway; to control convulsions and laryngeal spasm, 10% chloral hydrate 40-50 mg/kg each time can be used as retention enema; or diazepam 0.1-0.3 mg/kg each time, intramuscularly or intravenously.

Calcium therapy

Commonly used 10% calcium gluconate 5-10 ml is diluted 1-3 times with 10%-25% glucose solution and then slowly pushed (over 10 minutes) or dripped. When convulsions recur, it can be injected 1-2 times a day. After convulsions and laryngeal spasms are controlled or in the non-attack stage, give 5-10 ml of 10% calcium chloride, diluted 3-5 times with sugar water and taken orally 3 times a day. After taking it for 3-5 days, switch to 10% calcium gluconate.

Vitamin D treatment

After the symptoms are controlled, vitamin D should be supplemented according to vitamin D deficiency rickets to restore calcium and phosphorus metabolism to normal.

4. Control convulsions and laryngeal spasms

Use sedatives and calcium supplements immediately as directed by your doctor. When calcium is injected intravenously, it needs to be pushed slowly (over 10 minutes) or dripped to avoid vomiting or even cardiac arrest due to a sudden increase in blood calcium; avoid extravasation of the drug solution to avoid local necrosis.

5. Prevent suffocation

Closely observe the occurrence of syncope and laryngeal spasm, and make preoperative preparations for endotracheal intubation or tracheotomy. Once symptoms are detected, oxygen should be administered promptly. For those with laryngeal spasm, the tongue should be pulled out of the mouth immediately. At the same time, the child's head should be tilted to one side, oral and nasal secretions should be cleared, the airway should be kept open, and suffocation by inhalation should be avoided. For children who have already grown teeth, a dental pad should be placed between the upper and lower incisors to prevent the tongue from being bitten. If necessary, endotracheal intubation or tracheotomy should be performed.

6. Health Education

Provide guidance on proper feeding, arrange children's daily life reasonably, insist on a certain amount of outdoor activities every day, supplement vitamin D as prescribed by the doctor, and supplement calcium in appropriate amounts to prevent the recurrence of vitamin D deficiency tetany and treat rickets. Teach parents how to deal with convulsions and laryngeal spasms, such as having the child lie flat, loosen the collar, straighten the neck, and tilt the head back to keep the airway open, and call medical staff at the same time.

The above is an introduction on what to do if your child has tetany. I believe that after reading the above introduction, everyone will have a very good understanding of the relevant treatment measures for pediatric hand and foot convulsions and know what to do. In fact, tetany in children is mainly caused by calcium deficiency. Therefore, parents must give their children appropriate calcium supplements, so as to effectively prevent the occurrence of tetany in children.
