Hyperthermia convulsions are a common emergency in children. They occur when the baby's body temperature is higher than 39°C in the early stages of respiratory infection or other infectious diseases. Among them, high fever convulsions caused by upper respiratory tract infection are the most common. Generally, when the child's body temperature rises sharply, the higher the temperature, the more likely the attack is. It manifests as sudden onset of generalized or localized muscle rigidity and clonic convulsions, most of which are accompanied by impaired consciousness. The incidence of convulsions in children is 10 times that of adults, especially in infants and young children.

What should I do if my baby has a febrile convulsion?

1. Lying on your side or with your head tilted to one side

Immediately help the baby lie on his side with his head tilted slightly back and his chin slightly protruding forward, without a pillow; or remove the pillow and let the baby lie flat with his head tilted to one side. In this way, the root of the tongue will not block the airway and vomiting will not cause suffocation. Never give your baby medicine when he or she is having a seizure, otherwise there is a risk of aspiration pneumonia.

2. Keep the airway open

Unbutton your collar, wrap a tongue depressor or chopsticks with soft cloth or handkerchief and place it between the upper and lower molars to prevent biting your tongue. At the same time, use a handkerchief or gauze to promptly clear the secretions from the baby's mouth and nose to keep the respiratory tract open.

3. Control convulsions

Use your fingers to pinch and press the baby's Ren Zhong, Hegu, Neiguan and other acupoints for two or three minutes, and keep the surrounding environment quiet. Try to move the child as little as possible to reduce unnecessary stimulation.

4. Lower body temperature

Place cold towels on the baby's forehead, palms, and thighs, and change them frequently; keep the towel temperature not too high, or fill a hot water bottle with cold or ice water, wrap it with a towel, and place it on the baby's pillow, neck, and thighs.

Give oxygen in severe cases. For patients with high fever, physical cooling or antipyretic drugs should be used.

Note:

When children who have had febrile convulsions catch a cold, parents should closely observe their body temperature changes. Once the temperature reaches above 38°C, they should actively reduce the fever. There are two ways to reduce fever: one is physical cooling; the other is drug cooling. Physical cooling includes:

1. Warm water bath: The water temperature should be slightly higher than body temperature. Mainly use it to wash the palms, soles, armpits, popliteal fossa, groin, etc. of the child. However, the time should be short to prevent cold again and aggravate the condition.

2. Ice pillow: Use an ice bag to pillow the child's head, and at the same time apply a cold water wet towel to a large area of the forehead to lower the temperature of the head and protect the brain.
