How does Toxoplasma gondii affect the fetus?

Toxoplasma is called Sanshi worm in our traditional Chinese medicine. Toxoplasma is actually a kind of parasite. Toxoplasma is very harmful, so we must do a good job of preventing Toxoplasma in our daily life. Once infected with Toxoplasma, we must deal with it in time. If pregnant women are infected with Toxoplasma, it is easy to harm the fetus. Below we introduce the impact of Toxoplasma on the fetus.

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is very common around the world. Among adults in the United States and the United Kingdom, approximately 16% to 40% have been infected, and some surveys have shown that the rate is as high as 70%. In continental Europe and Latin America, 50% to 80% of adults have been infected, and the rate in France is as high as 90%. According to the survey conducted in 23 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in my country from 1985 to 1990, the percentage points were mostly below 10%, which is significantly lower than that in foreign countries.

Most normal people infected with Toxoplasma gondii have no symptoms or very mild symptoms, and they don't know when they were infected. Only a few people have fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, muscle and joint pain, and abdominal pain during the initial infection (or primary infection). After a few days or weeks, as the body develops immunity, the symptoms decrease. Only the formed cysts remain in the body for several months, several years or even longer, and generally heal on their own. However, if patients with severe immunodeficiency, such as AIDS patients, are infected, the consequences will be serious. Infection in pregnant women can be transmitted to the fetus, which may also have serious consequences.

Pregnant women infected with Toxoplasma gondii can transmit the infection to the fetus, causing congenital infection. Congenital infection of the fetus may have serious consequences, so it is very important. However, only pregnant women who have not been infected with Toxoplasma gondii before pregnancy can transmit the virus to the fetus if they have an initial (primary) infection during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman has been infected with Toxoplasma gondii before pregnancy, she is no longer at risk of transmission.

In the above article, we introduced what Toxoplasma gondii is. We know that the harm of Toxoplasma gondii is very wide, so everyone must do a good job of preventing Toxoplasma gondii. The above article gives us a detailed introduction to the impact of Toxoplasma gondii on the fetus. I hope it can be of some help to everyone.
