What to do if your child stutters

Parents are very worried about their children's stuttering, because the treatment of children's stuttering is quite troublesome. So what should we do when children stutter? We should first understand the cause of children's stuttering, and then we can make targeted treatments based on the cause of children's stuttering. There are many reasons that cause children to stutter. Let's take a look at the causes of children's stuttering and the treatment methods of children's stuttering below.

So far, we have not fully figured out the cause of children's stuttering, which brings us great difficulties in treating children's stuttering. It is generally believed that children's stuttering is related to genetics and mental factors.

Stuttering in children: refers to abnormal speech rhythm and repetition, resulting in unfluent speech. Most cases occur in preschool children, more commonly boys. The incidence of stuttering is approximately 1% to 2%.

It is unclear. It may be due to genetic factors, anxiety and stress (such as family life events), or neurological dysfunction due to physical illness, or stuttering due to imitation. Some people also believe that it is related to left-handedness, the dominant side of the brain. Some people believe that the abnormal EEG of patients who stutter may be related to the increased activity of the limbic system-reticular formation complex.

Related factors

1. Genetic factors: The incidence of stuttering in the family can reach 36% to 55%. Some people think it is related to genetic factors and may be a single gene inheritance. Some people also found that left-handedness is more common among stuttering patients and their relatives. It is believed that stuttering is related to the dominant side of the brain.

2 Physical factors: Many children have been exposed to harmful factors during the perinatal period or infancy, such as pregnancy toxemia, bleeding or physical diseases in the fetal period, or some infectious diseases during the development process, which weakened the nervous system and affected the speech function, leading to stuttering.

2. Psychological factors: Children's stuttering often occurs after acute or prolonged psychological trauma. Therefore, many theories believe that psychological factors may be an important cause of stuttering.

3 Other factors: Some preschool children suffer from stuttering due to imitation. Some data, based on EEG, electromyography of articulatory muscles and the clinical efficacy of fluphenazine, infer that stuttering may be related to factors such as increased activity of the limbic system and reticular formation complex, incoordination of articulatory muscle function and biochemical disorders in the basal ganglia. However, further clinical verification is needed.

Based on the research on the pathological mechanism of stuttering, it is believed that stuttering may be caused by the coexistence of multiple physiological and psychological factors.

First of all, we need to help the child overcome the inferiority and tension caused by stuttering. He or she can speak calmly and slowly, and gradually master the rules of fluent speech. Parents should treat children who stutter correctly, not over-correct their speech, and avoid punishment or discrimination. Take stuttering correction training treatment in time. Encourage children to participate in group activities and exercise. People with severe stuttering can be treated with small doses of haloperidol, 0.5 to 2 mg, 1 to 2 times a day, or anti-anxiety drugs.

In the above article, we introduced what stuttering is in children. We know that the occurrence of stuttering in children is very worrying for parents, but we have not yet figured out the cause of stuttering in children, so it has brought great trouble to the treatment of stuttering in children. The above article introduces what to do if a child stutters.
