Why does a child cough up yellow phlegm?

The problem of children coughing up yellow sputum is quite complicated. Many parents will become at a loss after discovering that their baby has this problem. They have no idea how to treat this situation of their baby. In fact, this is still related to internal heat. Therefore, you should give your baby more foods that clear away heat and detoxify, so that their condition can improve.

1. White sputum - not too serious

Wind-cold cough is a cough caused by catching a cold. This type of cough is severe, with clear and thin sputum. Fever is often accompanied by symptoms such as fear of chills, no sweating, and redness of the throat. Doctors generally believe that white sputum often means that the irritation is relatively "simple" and not too serious.

2. Yellow sputum is related to "heat"

It indicates infection. Wind-heat type cough is often accompanied by fever, sweating, sore throat, spitting out yellow thick sputum, yellow turbid nasal discharge, and red tongue coating. If the body has a fever while spitting yellow sputum, it can be confirmed that there is an infection. Whether it is viral or bacterial needs to be further confirmed based on the duration of the onset, the severity of the disease and relevant test results.

3. Red sputum: bleeding requires emergency treatment

There is no doubt that red sputum contains blood. Doctors remind: Any hemorrhagic cough is a symptom that requires emergency treatment. Although coughing hard and violently can cause the capillaries in the back of the throat to rupture and cause bleeding, it is not a very serious matter. However, if you encounter a hemorrhagic cough, it is best to ask a professional doctor for diagnosis.

4. Pink sputum with bubbles indicates pulmonary edema

A cough that brings up bubbling, pink-tinged phlegm and is accompanied by shortness of breath and a feeling like you are drowning could be a sign of pulmonary edema, which occurs when heart failure causes the lungs to fill with fluid.

5. Rusty jelly-like sputum: pneumonia

According to experts, if the sputum coughed up is reddish brown, rusty, or coffee-colored, and is jelly-like, the cause of the disease should be pneumonia caused by pneumococcus. This disease is often accompanied by chest pain and fever.

It can be used as an emergency measure to help children with expectoration when they are unable to cough up phlegm. The specific operation is: in the intervals between the child's coughing, let the child lie on his side or hold the child up to lie on his side. The parent slightly bends the five fingers of one hand, makes a fist, and gently pats the child's back. Pat your left side and lie on your left side, alternating between the two sides. The force of the slapping should not be too great, and it should be done from top to bottom and from outside to inside, in sequence.

Pat each side for at least 3-5 minutes, 2-3 times a day. The back-patting method can not only loosen the phlegm in the child's lungs and bronchi, drain it into the trachea and discharge it, but also promote blood circulation in the heart and lungs, which is beneficial to the absorption of bronchial inflammation and enables early recovery from the disease.
