Is it normal for premature babies to love sleeping?

Some premature babies seem to sleep all day long, and it is difficult to wake them up to feed. Some mothers may worry about this. Is it normal for premature babies to love to sleep? How do premature babies get through the critical period?

In fact, it is extremely normal for a newborn baby to sleep for a long time.

In the first few weeks, premature babies generally sleep in cycles of 2.4 hours, and then wake up crying. He feeds in a half-asleep, half-awake state, and falls into a deep sleep again when satisfied.

Premature babies may only be awake for a few minutes every hour during the day, which adds up to about an hour a day. They need to be awake for longer periods of time as they grow older, so sufficient sleep (especially light sleep or dreaming) is beneficial to the baby's growth. As the baby grows older, the time spent awake will increase. At 1 month old, the baby is awake for 2-3 hours a day, and most of these hours are concentrated in one time, usually in the evening; some sleep cycles can increase to 6 hours.

What is the appropriate room temperature for premature babies to sleep in?

The room temperature varies with the number of days after birth. In fact, the environmental temperature of premature babies after birth is lower than the temperature in the mother's womb. Therefore, after birth, the body temperature of premature babies drops significantly. It can be reduced by 2.5℃ within one hour. If the ambient temperature is moderate, the body temperature of the premature baby can gradually rise to 36℃-37℃. This most suitable ambient temperature is usually called moderate temperature or neutral temperature.

The neutral ambient temperature of premature infants often varies with their weight and age. Therefore, the room temperature needs to be adjusted according to the baby's birth days. (The room temperature recommendations discussed below are for full-term premature infants. Premature infants are not within the scope of this discussion)

1. 24 hours after birth: Place the baby naked in an incubator. The most suitable environmental temperature is 31~34℃. The temperature required for smaller immature babies is higher than that for full-term babies, which is 33~34℃.

2. 2 days after birth: After the second day, the temperature gradually drops to 22℃-26℃. Premature babies require higher room temperature than normal babies.

3. 3-5 days after birth: Generally, premature babies return home from the hospital 3-5 days after birth. Therefore, it is appropriate to keep the temperature of the premature baby's room at 20℃-22℃ at this time. For premature babies born in summer, the room temperature should also be controlled at 20℃-22℃. Air conditioning, electric fans and other methods can usually be used, but direct wind blowing on premature babies should be avoided. A breeze ceiling fan is more appropriate.
