1. High fever and dehydration

The body surface area of ​​newborns or infants is relatively larger than that of adults, so they dissipate heat faster than adults. If they are covered for too long or kept too warm, the temperature around the child's body will rise sharply. At this time, wrapping too much will affect the heat dissipation and put the body in a high fever state. At this time, the small blood vessels on the human skin may dilate compensatorily to accelerate heat dissipation through skin evaporation, that is, sweating and increased breathing, so the child will sweat a lot and even become dehydrated. Note: In addition, when the fever is high, the body's metabolism speeds up, oxygen consumption increases, and the lack of fresh air in the bed can also cause hypoxia in children.

2. Vomiting

After being kept warm for a long time, the child's body temperature rises rapidly, reaching 41℃~43℃. He sweats profusely and his clothes are soaked. A large amount of hot steam is emitted from his head. His face is pale, his crying is weak, and he refuses to eat. If the central nervous system is affected, frequent vomiting, screaming, slow reaction, staring, repeated convulsions, or coma may occur.

3. Coma or even death

Due to being suffocated and then sweating and losing water, the cerebral blood flow decreases, the brain tissue is ischemic and hypoxic, and coma can occur. And may be followed by cerebral edema. In severe cases, ischemic necrosis of brain cells can lead to permanent damage to the central nervous system, leaving sequelae such as epilepsy and mental retardation. Excessive warming can cause multiple organ and system failure, resulting in cerebral edema, arrhythmia, low blood pressure, respiratory failure, renal failure, and may also cause disseminated intravascular coagulation. If not treated promptly, it may even lead to sudden death of the baby within a short period of time.

What are the causes of neonatal heat syndrome?

The disease is mainly caused by over-warming the baby or covering the baby for too long. It is more common in infants under 1 year old, especially newborns who are less than one month old. It usually occurs in cold seasons, with the peak period from November to April of the following year. Excessive warming and stuffiness are the causative factors of infant heat syndrome, which are related to the incomplete development of the infant's nervous system, poor central nervous system regulation, immature function of the sweat glands on the body surface, and the inability to break free from the heat.

Once the baby is kept warm, the body temperature will rise, even to over 40℃, and the baby will sweat profusely. At first, the face will be red, and later due to the massive loss of water, the baby will develop dehydration symptoms such as irritability, dry mouth, oliguria, sunken anterior fontanelle and eye sockets, and decreased skin elasticity. If the condition is not controlled, it may be accompanied by serious complications. Improper handling or untimely treatment may cause serious consequences.
