What is the normal value of jaundice in a 4-day-old newborn?

What is the normal value of jaundice in a 4-day-old newborn?

It is normal for newborns to have jaundice, and most children will have jaundice to a greater or lesser extent after birth. However, neonatal jaundice is basically physiological, and generally the jaundice will gradually disappear as the baby grows. The peak period of jaundice is 3-5 days after the baby is born. At this time, parents need to pay attention to letting the baby bask in the sun and give the baby more water.

Jaundice range for newborns at 4 days old

When the baby's jaundice value exceeds 12.9mg/dl or the neonatal jaundice index rises too quickly (rising by more than 5mh/dl per day), or the jaundice lasts longer than the time it takes for a full-term baby to disappear within 14 days and for a premature baby to disappear within 4 weeks, or the jaundice disappears and reappears. It means that the neonatal jaundice is unhealthy and may be suffering from pathological jaundice.

1. Physiological jaundice

Usually, two days after birth, the newborn's skin is visibly a little yellow, which reaches its peak at 3 to 5 days and most of the time disappears at 7 to 10 days. At this time, the jaundice index (serum bilirubin value) is generally within the normal range of no more than 15 mg/dL.

2. Pathological jaundice There are many causes of pathological jaundice. The standards for full-term and premature babies are different. If the mother finds the following conditions, she should send the baby to the hospital for observation:

1. If jaundice is found in a newborn within 24 hours of birth, it is called "early jaundice".

2. The jaundice index rises too high all of a sudden, increasing by more than 5 mg/dL a day. This is a common type of jaundice (the blood types of the mother and baby are incompatible).

3. The jaundice index is too high, at 15mg/dL.

4. It lasts too long. Generally, physiological jaundice lasts for 7 to 10 days. If it lasts for more than two weeks, you should pay attention.

What are the symptoms of jaundice in babies?

1. Fever occurs. Jaundice with fever is generally caused by acute cholangitis, and some patients are also afraid of chills. Other diseases that may cause moderate or high fever include liver abscess, sepsis, and leptospirosis. Diseases that first cause fever and then jaundice are more likely to be caused by acute hemolysis or acute viral hepatitis.

2. Abdominal pain occurs. Jaundice caused by diseases such as bile duct stones, liver abscess, primary liver cancer or biliary ascariasis often presents with severe pain or colic in the upper abdomen; persistent dull pain or bloating in the right upper abdomen is mostly a manifestation of viral hepatitis; dull pain or bloating in the upper abdomen or right upper abdomen is more common in patients with liver abscess or liver cancer.

3. Abnormalities in the skin. Some patients are more prone to skin itching, such as patients with intrahepatic and cholestatic jaundice; those with pigmentation on exposed skin parts such as the face, as well as liver palms and spider nevi, are mostly caused by diseases such as cirrhosis, active hepatitis and primary liver cancer.

There are many symptoms of jaundice. The color of the sclera and skin will change. In addition to the above, there will be symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, upper abdominal fullness, etc. Eating greasy food will also cause varying degrees of pain in the right upper abdomen. Some patients will have bleeding symptoms in the digestive tract. In addition, the color of urine and feces will also change. Changes in internal organs include enlargement of the liver, spleen, and gallbladder, and some patients will even have ascites.
