Back to school syndrome

Back to school syndrome

For students who have to go to school, having a holiday is a very happy thing, because during the holiday they don’t have to go to bed early and get up early, and they can do what they want. Especially for students, they have winter and summer vacations, and they can play to their heart's content during this time. However, some people will panic a few days before school starts. This is the back-to-school syndrome. So why do children suffer from back-to-school syndrome?

There are five groups of students who are prone to "school phobia", namely, students with low psychological quality and poor adaptability, students who are often criticized by teachers at school, students with poor academic performance, students who cannot adapt to the new environment quickly, and some excellent students who are too focused on academic perfection. Most of the students who are prone to "back-to-school syndrome" have experienced setbacks in their studies or other activities. Back-to-school syndrome will make students unable to adapt to school life, resulting in distraction in class and reduced learning efficiency.

Cause Analysis

Psychologists point out that children's "school phobia" is partly due to their young age and poor adaptability and transition abilities, but the more important reason is the lack of social education, school education, and family education. The author tries to analyze the following reasons:

Semester System

The current semester system arrangement in our country's schools is not reasonable enough. There are two semesters in a school year and two holidays, winter break and summer break. Each semester lasts four or five months, and the holiday lasts one or two months. Students are in a state of long-term mental tension during the school day, but lack organization when the holidays come. The holidays are long and very relaxing. There is a huge gap between the overly "relaxed" holiday life and the overly "tense" study rhythm. The alternation of tension and relaxation, lack of relief and transition, makes it difficult for people to adapt physiologically due to the rapid changes, and it is also difficult to accept psychologically. When the holiday is over, it is very difficult to concentrate on studying, which leads to some discomfort symptoms. In contrast, some Western countries have relatively scientific holiday arrangements. For example, the holidays for universities, colleges and primary and secondary schools in Germany are also about 150 days, but they are divided into winter, summer and spring holidays, and there are also numerous weekends and holiday breaks. This way, your daily studies will not be too stressful. The transition between holidays and non-holidays is smoothed, and people will not have too much psychological and physiological stimulation, which reduces or avoids the occurrence of "back-to-school syndrome". This is worth learning from.

Education

Our current education is often linked to utilitarian goals such as further study, employment, treatment, success, and glory. This is closely related to the teachings of parents and the education methods of schools. From an educational perspective, China mostly adopts the method of exam-oriented education, which runs counter to the original intention of "people-oriented" education, and the effectiveness of education is greatly reduced. Faced with this educational model, primary and secondary school students have prematurely assumed the "utilitarian" expectations from their families, society, and schools. Students face a lot of "extra" academic pressure, which puts them under tremendous psychological stress.
