What are the taboos in caring for newborns?

In real life, a newborn refers to a baby who has just been born. Since the body of a newborn is not fully developed at birth, you need to pay more attention to some taboos and precautions when taking care of the newborn. Generally speaking, newborns are very cute babies, and many people like to kiss their faces or hold them in their arms, etc., but these actions are taboos for newborns. Since the child's body has poor resistance during development, doing so will easily spread bacteria.

1. Pinch your baby’s face

Babies are very cute, and many parents express their love by pinching their little faces. Well-behaved children will smile because of this action, but this action is actually not very good. Sometimes family members fail to control the strength well, which can easily cause external force damage to the child's parotid gland and parotid duct, causing diseases such as stomatitis. We express our love and care for our children in a safe and harmless way.

Tip: Pinching the cheeks may seem like a small action, but it can cause great potential harm to the baby. If things go on like this for a long time, the parotid glands and parotid ducts of infants and young children will be squeezed again and again, which will cause the baby to drool frequently, oral mucosal inflammation and other diseases. The harm caused to the baby by parents' unintentional actions is often hidden and difficult to detect. By the time parents realize the importance of it, it is often too late.

2. Afraid of shaking head

The baby's head accounts for a large proportion of the body in terms of length and weight, and the baby's neck is relatively soft, so the baby's control is weak. Therefore, the shaking action of adults can easily cause the baby's tender brain tissue to constantly swing and collide in the cranial cavity due to inertia, thus causing concussion, cerebral edema, and even capillary rupture.

Tip: The younger the baby, the greater the harm. Babies under 10 months old are particularly at risk. Parents should not rock the stroller or cradle at will. If necessary, they can pat or stroke the baby's back or buttocks to help the baby fall asleep. Babies held in your arms should only be rocked gently and not vigorously. As for throwing the baby up or shaking the baby by the arms, this should be absolutely prohibited.

3. Cut your child’s eyelashes

Long eyelashes do look good, and some parents will cut some of their children's eyelashes in order to make them have long eyelashes in the future. In fact, this practice has no clear scientific basis. The function of eyelashes is to protect the eyes. If a child's eyelashes are cut off, the protective function will be weakened, and the eyes will easily be disturbed by external dust and other substances, causing discomfort to the child.

Tips: First of all, what is cut off is the tip of the eyelashes, which is relatively soft and thin, while the remaining roots are relatively rough and hard. This part of the eyelashes can easily irritate the eyes, causing eye diseases such as conjunctivitis and keratitis, and causing symptoms such as photophobia, tearing, and blepharospasm. Secondly, the baby's hair follicles are delicate. If you accidentally scratch the hair follicles when cutting the baby's eyelashes, then the baby will never grow eyelashes again. If you accidentally scratch your baby's skin while cutting his eyelashes, the eyelids may be infected by bacteria and become ulcerated and scarred. The baby may no longer grow eyelashes and may be left with ugly scars.

If you want your baby's eyelashes to grow longer, you can add foods that help eyelash growth into the complementary food when the baby is older, such as: black sesame seeds, black beans, as well as tofu, seaweed, fruits, and vegetables.

4. Let the child sleep between the parents

Newborns need care, and many young parents like to put their children in the middle when they sleep. Their original intention is to understand the children's situation in time and take better care of them. However, they do not know that this behavior is actually not good for the children's health. First of all, if one parent sleeps on his side, there will be a large gap in the quilt, and cold wind can easily come in, which will make the baby sleeping in the middle catch a cold. In addition, the adults sleeping on both sides of the child will compete with them for oxygen. The younger the child, the greater the proportion of the brain's total oxygen consumption. In an oxygen-deficient environment, it is easy to cause lack of sleep or crying. Therefore, experts still recommend that the child be placed in a comfortable crib while being within the parents' field of vision.

Tip: The brain tissue in the human body consumes the most oxygen. The oxygen consumption of adult brain tissue accounts for about 20% of the total body oxygen consumption. The younger the child, the greater the proportion of brain oxygen consumption in the total body oxygen consumption, and in infants and young children it can be as high as 50%. If a baby sleeps between his parents, the "exhaust gas" discharged by the adults will work together to put the child in an environment of hypoxia and high carbon dioxide concentration, causing the child to have sleep disturbances, cry in the middle of the night, etc., affecting the child's normal growth and development.

5. Avoid getting your lower abdomen cold

The baby's stomach is particularly sensitive to temperature and is most afraid of catching cold. Once it catches cold, its intestinal motility may increase, leading to abdominal pain and diarrhea. Abdominal pain and diarrhea will, in turn, seriously affect the baby's absorption of nutrients, further reduce the baby's resistance, and open the door to the invasion of various infectious diseases.

Tip: Mom and Dad should dress their baby in clothes of appropriate thickness according to changes in temperature. Now, as we enter late autumn and the temperature gradually drops, parents should use air conditioners, electric heaters, stoves, etc. to raise the room temperature as much as possible. When changing your baby's diaper or bathing your baby, try to be quick and warm up the baby's underwear before changing it. Even in the hot summer, you should not let your baby sleep naked. Use a towel or belly band to protect the baby's abdomen.

6. Avoid using hot water when washing your feet

Washing or soaking feet in hot water is a health-preserving method for adults, but it would be a big mistake to apply it to babies.

The human foot is made up of 26 bones of different sizes and shapes, which are connected to each other by ligaments and joints, forming an upward protruding arch structure - the arch of the foot. The arch of the foot can cushion the shock to the body during walking, running and jumping, and protect the nerves and blood vessels in the sole of the foot from compression. The critical period for arch formation is childhood, and hot water may relax the ligaments on the sole of the foot, leading to flat feet. Parents should never soak their baby's feet in hot water.

Tip: Mom and Dad can choose to wash or soak their baby’s feet with warm water to avoid this disadvantage.
