Are people with Down syndrome necessarily stupid?

Prenatal check-ups during pregnancy are very important for women. Regular prenatal check-ups can not only detect whether the baby is healthy, but also effectively avoid many diseases. Down syndrome is a very common chromosomal abnormality disease. This disease is mostly caused by genetic factors. The main clinical symptoms are mental retardation and slow physical development. There is currently no good treatment for this disease. Generally, Down syndrome babies are mainly mentally retarded and must be treated early.

What are the symptoms of Down syndrome

1. The child has obvious special facial features. Such as wide distance between eyes, low root of nose, small palpebral fissure, upward slanting outer sides of eyes, epicanthus, small external ears, fat tongue that often sticks out of mouth, and excessive drooling.

2. Children have intellectual disability: Children with this disease will have intellectual disability, which will become more obvious with age. Their IQ is between 20 and 50, and their motor and sexual development are delayed.

3. The body is particularly weak and loose: When holding the child, you will find that his body is particularly weak and loose, with a short little finger and only one horizontal line in the palm.

4. Slow physical development: The child develops slowly physically. Many Down syndrome babies may also have congenital defects of the heart and other organs. At the same time, due to low immune function, they are prone to various infections, and the incidence of leukemia is 10-30 times higher than normal. If they survive into adulthood, they often develop symptoms of Alzheimer's disease after the age of 30.

5. Males will not be able to reproduce, but females may be able to reproduce: Male babies with Down syndrome will not be able to reproduce when they grow up to puberty. Female babies with Down syndrome will have menstruation when they grow up and may have children.

Impact of Down syndrome

1. The child often giggles, and some movements are slow, or even incomplete. The movements are clumsy. He likes to imitate simple movements frequently and repeat them over and over again. When encountering some things, the child will be emotionally unstable, react violently, and easily become agitated and willful, and may also have destructive and aggressive behaviors.

2. The children are short, deformed, poorly nourished, have breathing problems, and are prone to respiratory infections. The chances of developing Alzheimer's disease are higher after middle age, and it is easy to experience symptoms such as memory loss, persistent intellectual impairment, and personality changes.

3. Some children have congenital heart disease, gastrointestinal malformations, and hypothyroidism. Because children have low immune function, they are prone to various infections, and a few may have leukemia. It is often fatal if not treated early.

After pregnant women have undergone examination, if the results are high risk, they still need to undergo further amniocentesis examination. Older mothers are more likely to suffer from Down syndrome, so they must undergo Down syndrome screening. Therefore, friends who want to get pregnant should get pregnant as soon as possible.
