The child keeps coughing

Babies usually have weak body resistance. If it is during the season of changing seasons, it is usually easy for babies to get sick. Some babies are prone to coughing, especially at night, the cough may become more severe or more frequent, which has a great impact on the baby's sleep. It needs to be taken seriously and actively treated. In general, what is the reason why babies keep coughing?

What is the reason why the child keeps coughing?

1. Acute cough: refers to cough lasting less than 3 weeks and is the most common symptom in respiratory outpatient clinics. Causes include acute bronchitis, pneumonia, respiratory tract infection, tuberculosis, tracheal foreign body, etc.

2. Subacute cough: A cough that lasts for more than 3 weeks and less than 8 weeks is called a subacute cough, and the causes are more complicated.

3. Chronic cough: It lasts for more than 8 weeks and can last for years or even decades. The causes of chronic cough are more complicated, including cough variant asthma (allergic bronchitis), upper respiratory tract cough syndrome (allergic rhinitis-bronchitis), gastroesophageal reflux, eosinophilic bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, etc. Among them, cough variant asthma and upper respiratory tract cough syndrome are the most common.

Cough is the main symptom of respiratory diseases. The formation and recurrence of cough are often the result of the combined effects of many complex factors. The general causes of baby cough are as follows:

1. Upper respiratory tract infection

That is, the common cold is caused by viruses entering the human body through the nasal cavity and throat, causing inflammation of the upper respiratory tract mucosa. When babies have a cold, they usually have a cough.

2. Bronchitis

Most of them are caused by the spread of upper respiratory tract infection, which develops rapidly. In the early stage, it is mostly dry cough, followed by coughing, sputum and other discomforts. In severe cases, hypoxia occurs due to difficulty breathing, and the lips turn blue and purple.

3. Pneumonia

Most babies under 2 years old suffer from bronchopneumonia, which is mostly caused by upper respiratory tract infection or bronchitis. There is usually a dry cough, as well as shortness of breath, cyanosis of the lips, and flaring of the nose. Except for newborns, the fever usually reaches 39°C.

4. Acute laryngitis

In addition to dry cough and throat pain, the most typical symptom of acute laryngitis is hoarseness or even inability to speak. A dog-like coughing sound is heard when inhaling air, and in severe cases, laryngeal wheezing may occur.

In addition to going to the pediatric internal medicine clinic, parents may wish to take their baby to see an otolaryngologist to eliminate the cause of the cough. Even if the cough is caused by bronchitis or pneumonia, there is not necessarily an active infection. For persistent coughs, do not use antibiotics for a long time, and there is no need to use antiviral drugs for a long time. Even if there is no bacterial or viral infection, long-term use of antibiotics will only increase the side effects of the drugs and lead to a decrease in white blood cell count. Dysbiosis. Impaired gastric function. Treatment should focus on protecting, repairing, and restoring the function of the respiratory mucosa. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining indoor air humidity can improve ciliary motor function, thin sputum, and facilitate excretion, ensure fresh air at home, and reduce indoor dust. Hope the babies recover soon!
