The correct way to burp a newborn

Many people have experienced burping, whether they are full or not. Burping is a painful thing, and it can be very painful for both adults and children. If a child burps, parents will be very anxious, because parents all know the pain of burping and they cannot bear to see their children suffer. Below I will explain to mothers the correct way to burp a newborn. Mothers can learn it.

1. Causes of hiccups in newborns

Like adults, normal children have a very thin layer of muscle between the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity, called the diaphragm, which separates the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity and plays a role in separating and protecting the chest and abdominal organs. Unlike adults, infants mainly breathe abdominally, and the diaphragm is part of their respiratory muscles. When the diaphragm contracts, the chest cavity expands, causing inhalation; when the diaphragm relaxes, the chest cavity volume decreases, causing exhalation.

When a baby eats too quickly or inhales cold air, the autonomic nervous system will be stimulated, causing the diaphragm to contract suddenly, causing rapid inhalation and a "hiccup" sound. When this sound is made rhythmically, it is called baby hiccups.

1. Let the baby lean on the mother's shoulder

The mother should find a comfortable position to sit or stand, and put a soft handkerchief on her shoulders first to prevent the baby from spitting up milk when burping. When burping the baby, hold the baby's head steady, gently lift him up, let his lower jaw rest on the mother's shoulder or tilt his head to one side, use one hand to hold his hips to support him, and lean your body slightly backward. After your baby is three months old, you can also let your baby sit on your lap and burp him.

2. Pat your baby on the back

Make a fist with your right hand and gently pat the baby's back for about five minutes, starting from the bottom and working your way up, pat 3 to 5 times and then stop for a while. If you don't hear any hiccups, you can clap for a few more rounds and stop after you hear the hiccups.

3. Let your baby lie on his side

After burping the baby, gently place the baby on the right side of the bed. If a little milk occasionally leaks out of the corners of his mouth, just wipe it clean. If the baby still spits up too much milk, you should pick him up and continue patting him.

4. Notes

If your baby burps at irregular intervals, burp him once between breastfeedings. When feeding him formula milk, burp him after he has finished 80 ml. If one method of burping doesn't work, immediately try another one. If you are sitting, stand up. Don't force your baby to burp if he doesn't want to. He will burp naturally when he's ready.

The correct way to burp the baby can be divided into three steps. The first step is to let the baby lean on the mother's shoulder. The second step is to pat the baby's back. The third step is to let the baby lie on his side on the bed after the burp is gone. In addition, we have also introduced the relevant matters that you need to pay attention to when burping your baby. I hope all mothers can pay attention to them.
