One-year-old baby always hits his head

From the moment a baby is born to the time he or she slowly comes into contact with the world, there is always a process of exploration and curiosity. The more curious the baby is about the outside world, the faster he or she is likely to grow. Parents sometimes find that babies around one year old constantly hit their heads with their hands, and they don't know why. In fact, depending on the specific circumstances of different babies, there are many reasons why one-year-old babies always hit their heads. Only after finding the reason can this habit be changed.

Hanhan is one year old this year. Recently, his family has discovered that he always likes to hit his head with his hands, regardless of whether he is happy or not. His mother can’t figure out what’s going on and doesn’t know whether he is sick or simply finds it fun. So she explained her questions and symptoms to the doctor during the physical examination, hoping to get an answer. After examining Hanhan, Yao Tianhong, deputy chief physician from the Children's Health Department of Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital, told Hanhan's mother that there was nothing wrong with his body and hitting his head was just a habitual action due to his playfulness. Director Yao said that in fact, many parents will encounter the situation of their babies hitting their heads in daily life. Parents should understand that although infants and older children cannot clearly express their discomfort, careful parents can still understand the physical condition of their children through the signals conveyed by their children's expressions and behaviors. It is necessary to observe and distinguish whether it is a baby's small movements or a disease.

Habitual Action

If your baby laughs happily while hitting his head, in most cases this may just be a habitual action that the baby finds fun. Parents can distract their baby with toys or other activities. However, if the symptoms continue to worsen as the child gets older, the child should be taken to a neurology department to rule out behavioral disorders and other problems.

Seeking excitement

Some babies like to hit their heads because they are looking for excitement. It may be an accidental collision at first, and they find it very exciting, so slowly it forms a habit of hitting the head. The solution is mainly to give him something to do with his hands so that his attention can be diverted to other aspects, and gradually he will stop doing this action.

Itchy scalp

When a rash on the scalp causes itchiness, some babies are unable to scratch the itch accurately and may hit their heads with their hands. In this case, parents should pay attention to daily hygiene, wash the baby's hair frequently, and treat the rash on the scalp in time.

Fever causes headache

The most common cause of headaches in children is high fever. When the human body temperature rises, the metabolic products in the body increase, blood flow speeds up, and the blood vessels in the brain become congested, causing headaches. Some children will become irritable and hit their heads.

Teething

During the teething period, babies’ gums will become red, swollen and painful, and some babies will express their discomfort by hitting their heads. When a baby's teeth are coming out, you can vaguely see that the gums in some parts of the mouth are white or slightly red and swollen, and when you touch the gums, they feel like hard objects like tooth tips.

Otitis media

Otitis media can cause ear pain in babies. Older babies can accurately express the location of the pain, but younger babies cannot speak and may express it by hitting their heads. The headache caused by otitis media also occurs on the same side as the affected ear. Children often complain of pain in the affected ear at the same time as the headache. They press the painful ear and cry loudly, and sometimes even pus can be seen in the ear.
