What to do if your child coughs while sleeping but not at other times

There are many children who are very normal during the day, but they will have severe coughs at night, and they will also cough when they get up in the morning. This happens repeatedly every day. This phenomenon makes many parents don’t know how to deal with it. In fact, the cause of this phenomenon is often the syndrome of upper airway cough. So what should we do if children cough when they sleep but not at other times?

First, what should we do if children cough when they sleep but not at other times? This situation is medically called "poor tracheobronchial compliance", which usually occurs in children with asthma, severe tracheobronchial inflammation or frequent tracheobronchial inflammation. However, it does not rule out allergic or irritating coughs caused by people with insufficient saliva swallowing reflex during sleep, people with gastric acid reflux, or dust/mites in the quilt.

Second, after a person falls asleep, the muscles of the whole body relax, including the muscles of the trachea and bronchus. Therefore, under normal circumstances, the trachea and bronchus cavity will become smaller after the smooth muscles of the throat/trachea/bronchus relax. However, if a child has suffered from severe trachea/bronchus/asthma, the trachea cavity itself is relatively small (because of edema or "scars" left after inflammation), irritating coughs will occur when the air is relaxed, and edema will occur.

Third, based on the situation you described, it should be considered as an "allergic or irritant cough caused by dust/mites in clothes and bedding." Therefore, you should wash the quilt/pillow/pillow cover/sheet/bed lining and other objects that come into contact with during sleep, and expose them to the sun (note that it is "exposed") for 4 hours.

What should I do if my child coughs when sleeping but not at other times? Give your child calcium/vitamin AD supplements, because calcium and vitamin AD supplements can reduce allergies; strengthen nutrition, especially vitamin C, 2 tablets of vitamin C per day (200 mg, once or twice), and the symptoms will be much relieved after three months; strengthen exercise, because exercise can promote the function and recovery of the trachea/bronchus. Because your child has allergies, do not give "anti-allergy drugs" unless necessary, because these drugs will reduce resistance.
