How long does it take for a child to read after his pupils are dilated?

How long will it take for a child to be able to read after mydriasis? This depends on the child's recovery. In fact, the purpose of mydriasis is to effectively help relieve eye fatigue. Generally speaking, it will not cause adverse effects on the patient's health. As long as the correct medication or method is used, the following are some precautions for mydriasis in children.

1. Function

The purpose of mydriasis is to relieve eye fatigue and relax tense muscles so that the refractive power tested will be more accurate. Mydriasis itself does not cause adverse effects to patients. Mydriasis requires medication. Any medicine has side effects, and improper use of the medicine will damage the body's health to varying degrees. Of course, abuse, misuse, and improper use will also cause delays. Therefore, mydriatic drugs must be used under the guidance of a professional doctor or optometrist. However, after mydriasis, there may be temporary photophobia and blurred vision of near objects (it has no effect on distant vision and you can still live a normal life). The time to return to normal varies depending on the different mydriatic drugs. Tropicamide generally returns to normal within 4-6 hours, while atropine takes 3 days. After mydriasis caused by atropine, it will recover on its own in about 2-3 weeks and it is harmless to the eyes. Dilation of the pupil can put the eyes in a resting state and can also be used to prevent and treat myopia. However, care should be taken to block out strong light and reduce the intake of ultraviolet rays.

2. Precautions for atropine mydriasis

Atropine eye drops can not only treat visual fatigue and pseudomyopia, but are also the only accurate means to examine refractive errors and determine their nature (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) and diagnose amblyopia. Correct use is harmless to the eyes and the body.

1. Apply the medicine to both eyes, 1 drop three times a day (morning, noon and evening) for 3 consecutive days, and come to the hospital for an eyesight test on the 4th day.

2. Before applying the medicine, parents should wash their hands and cut their nails short. First, press the inner canthus (i.e. lacrimal sac) of both eyes and then apply the medicine. The pressure should last for at least 2 minutes. Then, use the prepared tissue paper to absorb the liquid outside the eye and then stop the pressure. The purpose is to block the tear puncta and reduce the absorption of drugs into the oral and nasal cavity through the tear puncta. Younger children may blush, so just drink more warm water.

3. After applying the medicine, the pupils will dilate, there will be photophobia (you can wear sunglasses) and difficulty seeing close up. It will take about three weeks to fully recover.

4. If your child suffers from serious heart disease or has been diagnosed with glaucoma, please inform the parents and use the product with caution according to the doctor's advice. If you have fever, acute conjunctivitis or other illnesses, please suspend use.

5. Atropine eye drops are only for mydriasis eye examination. Do not increase or decrease the number of uses at your own will. Do not take them orally or give them to others. Discard the remaining eye drops after eye examination. Keep the medicine in a cool place during use, no need to refrigerate.
