What should I do if food gets into my child’s trachea? Try these four tips

Children who are too young and don’t understand can easily choke when eating, which can seriously affect their lives. When parents are feeding their children, they should avoid teasing or talking loudly. Generally, when children talk loudly or laugh, the trachea is open and food can easily enter the trachea and cause choking. Do not feed your child hard or age-inappropriate food on a daily basis, such as peanuts, melon seeds, etc., and it is best not to have foreign objects in the mouth. Besides these, what else should parents pay attention to?

I have 4 suggestions for you:

1. Do not feed young babies food that is not suitable for their age group, even if they have teeth. Children under three years old should try to avoid eating hard foods such as peanuts and melon seeds. You can buy peanut butter for your children.

2. Do not let your child have the bad habit of holding foreign objects in his mouth. If you find such a problem, correct it in time. Also, do not make your child laugh while eating, and change the bad habit of talking while eating.

3. For families with children under 3 years old, parents should be diligent and pick up small objects that may be put into their mouths. Especially for children who are just beginning to learn to crawl and walk, parents must supervise them closely and not let them out of their sight.

4. If the child chokes on a foreign object, parents must not panic and do not try to dig it out with their hands. Instead, they can use the inverted back-patting method to detect when the child has choked on a foreign object. Parents can immediately lift the child's legs upside down, with the child's head hanging down, and gently pat the child's back. In this way, the foreign object can be forced to be coughed out through its own gravity and the impact of the gas in the chest cavity during choking. If the treatment is ineffective, send the child to the hospital immediately.
