What is rotavirus in children?

Rotavirus is a disease with a relatively wide range of infections. It usually occurs in children under five years old. Once infected, it will recur repeatedly. The incidence rate is highest in the autumn and winter seasons. Therefore, as a patient, you must receive effective treatment and control at ordinary times. Generally, rotavirus will break out within a short time after infection. The patient's personal belongings, private items, and people who come into contact with the patient need to be repeatedly disinfected to avoid it.

What is rotavirus in children?

Rotavirus infection is widespread. Almost all children under the age of 5 have had rotavirus infection at least once, and the infection may be repeated. It is an important pathogen of gastrointestinal infection in hospital-acquired infections, and is most prevalent in autumn and winter. Most infections are caused by direct or indirect contact with sick people, mainly through the fecal-oral route, although respiratory transmission is also possible.

Vaccination time: 1-3 days, that is, the time interval between the onset of clinical symptoms after infection with the virus is 1-3 days. Rotavirus is excreted in large quantities in the feces of diarrheal patients. Infected persons with normal immune function can continue to excrete the virus until 21 days after the onset of clinical symptoms, while immunocompromised persons can continue to excrete the virus for a long time. At present, our hospital can make rapid diagnosis through stool rotavirus antigen testing.

To prevent nosocomial outbreaks or epidemics of rotavirus infection, clinical departments should follow the following regulations:

1. Perform a rapid diagnosis of rotavirus antigen test on the suspects through stool test. Those confirmed as rotavirus infection or carriers (positive laboratory test, no obvious clinical manifestations of diarrhea) need to be isolated in contact: bedside contact isolation (hanging contact isolation sign) or single room isolation can be selected. In principle, isolation should be lifted when the child's stool rotavirus test is negative.

2. Rotavirus still has a survival rate of 16.1% 20 minutes after contaminating hands. Therefore, medical staff need to wear gloves when contacting sick children and the surrounding environment. They need to wash their hands with running water before feeding milk, before and after contacting patients, before and after operations, and after removing gloves. Especially after handling the excrement of sick children (diapers), they must immediately wash their hands with strict running water. Please note that the ethanol-containing rapid hand disinfection method is not ideal for rotavirus disinfection.

3. Environmental disinfection requires the use of 1000 mg/L effective chlorine preparation for wiping or spraying, and the wet disinfection time must be no less than 30 minutes.

4. When the child's excrement contaminates the surrounding environment or objects, immediately cover the contaminated surface with a disinfectant towel containing 1000 mg/L of effective chlorine and disinfect for 30 minutes. The contaminated clothing should be soaked for 30 minutes before being uniformly cleaned and disinfected.

5. Medical waste generated by sick children should be placed in sealed medical waste bins and covered tightly. The medical waste bins should be cleaned and disinfected every day.
