Do children with cerebral palsy have normal intelligence?

When a baby is in a pregnant woman's womb, we should be able to determine whether the baby is healthy, but there are some diseases that cannot be identified. After a pregnant woman gives birth normally, it is found that some babies have cerebral palsy, which is what we usually call cerebral palsy children. Children with cerebral palsy have abnormal thinking ability. Lack of normal human behavior and thinking abilities. But do children with cerebral palsy have normal intelligence?

Although mental retardation is one of the main accompanying symptoms of children with cerebral palsy, it does not mean that children with cerebral palsy have poor intelligence. According to expert statistics, only about 25% of cerebral palsy patients have symptoms of mental retardation, while the rest of the children are normal or close to normal. Therefore, children with cerebral palsy do not necessarily have intellectual disabilities. The key is to attach importance to scientific and comprehensive treatment, including surgical treatment, rehabilitation training, etc. In clinical treatment, we found that many children with cerebral palsy have returned to society after long-term scientific and standardized rehabilitation and treatment.

Currently, the most common type of cerebral palsy is spastic cerebral spasm, which is the most suitable for surgical treatment. 90% of patients with spastic cerebral palsy who received systematic rehabilitation training before and after surgery had their lower limb motor function greatly improved and regained the ability to take care of themselves. So far, FSPR (functional selective posterior rhizotomy) is one of the most suitable surgical procedures for patients with spastic cerebral palsy. It selectively blocks the posterior roots of spinal nerves, which are sensory branches, not motor nerves. By cutting the dorsal root of the spinal nerve, muscle tone can be significantly reduced. One thing that needs to be noted here is to put the relationship between FSPR and orthopedic surgery in the right place. FSPR cannot completely replace orthopedic surgery, but it should be noted that FSPR surgery to relieve spasms should be performed first, and corrective surgery should be performed later. This order should not be reversed.

During the long process of surgical and rehabilitation treatment for children with cerebral palsy, we must adhere to the scientific and standardized treatment approach of relieving limb spasticity → rehabilitation → orthopedics → re-rehabilitation. Only in this way can we more effectively ensure the surgical effect, reduce surgical risks and improve surgical efficacy. It can also effectively avoid the recurrence of spasticity, improve motor function, and improve the quality of life and work ability of patients with cerebral palsy. Children with cerebral palsy who are receiving rehabilitation treatment need to remember that this is a chronic disease that requires patient training day after day. The recovery of various functions mainly depends on the children's own exercises with the help of doctors and parents.

Therefore, the children must first be allowed to adapt to various movements. In addition, it is impossible for the child to complete every movement by himself, so parents must help them. But it must be emphasized that help is by no means a replacement. For example, when eating, some children can eat slowly by themselves, but their clothes may get dirty easily due to incorrect posture. Parents can only help correct their incorrect posture but cannot feed them. Parents should also keep in mind that every time a child recovers a function, there is a certain price to pay, and every movement needs to be trained repeatedly before it can be finally consolidated. At the same time, only after a certain action is characterized can the training of the next action be carried out.
