What should I do if my child catches a cold and has a fever at night?

As soon as autumn comes, it starts to get chilly in the mornings and evenings. Some children are restless when sleeping at night and always like to kick off the quilts, so they catch a cold accidentally and start to have a fever. This made the parents very anxious, and they took their children to the emergency room in the middle of the night. In fact, you don’t need to go to the hospital immediately when you catch a cold or fever. Here I will teach you a few tips on how to deal with it when you find that your child has a cold at night.

1. Physical cooling method

In the absence of direct cold wind, taking off too much clothes or loosening clothes is conducive to heat dissipation. Give children a sponge bath with 35%-45% alcohol or warm water, mainly in places where large blood vessels are distributed, such as the forehead, neck, armpits, groin and thigh roots, which can achieve the effect of cooling down.

2. Taking medicine for fever

There are many causes of fever in children. When the pathogen is unknown, it is best not to abuse anti-inflammatory drugs, because "all medicines are poisonous". If anti-inflammatory drugs are abused, it can cause damage to the liver and kidney functions of children, increase the resistance of pathogens to drugs, and be detrimental to physical recovery. It is best to treat children's fever under the guidance of a doctor and prescribe the right medicine according to the condition to achieve the effect of curing the disease;

3. Diet for fever

Give your child plenty of water to drink, so that the heat can be discharged from the child's urine and can indirectly lower the child's body temperature. If you refuse to drink water, you can drink juice instead; eat easily digestible food, preferably porridge, soup, noodles during the fever;

4. Cold compress

You can buy some medical ice packs on a daily basis and apply them to your child’s head when he or she has a fever. Do not apply the ice packs under the armpits, as this can easily cause frostbite on the child’s delicate skin. For very young children, you can wrap the ice pack with a soft dry towel and avoid direct contact with the child's skin. Stop applying ice if your child's temperature drops or he or she starts to shiver.

When a child has a fever, be sure to ventilate the room and keep the air circulating. In addition, some parents believe that children with fever should be covered up to induce sweating and cool down. In fact, this method is not feasible. The heat in the body cannot dissipate, which will only aggravate the child's condition and is also dangerous to the child. If the fever lasts for more than one day, you should take your child to the hospital to find out what is causing it.
