What are the reasons why children drool at night?

Drooling is a normal physiological reaction. When children are sleeping, they still secrete a small amount of saliva to protect the oral mucosa of their teeth. Under special circumstances, such as dreaming of delicious food, saliva secretion can be stimulated. Increased saliva secretion can cause drooling. Improper position can sometimes cause drooling. Do you know the reason why children drool at night?

There are two reasons for baby drooling: physiological drooling and pathological drooling.

Physiological salivation

1. Babies drool while sleeping, which often occurs during the teething period. At this time, the oral cavity is an important organ for the baby to change. The increased saliva can reduce the gum pain caused by the growth of deciduous teeth. It is normal to drool at this time. Mothers do not need to worry too much. Just pay attention to oral hygiene. As the baby grows up, the drooling phenomenon will gradually disappear.

2. The salivary glands of newborns are underdeveloped, saliva secretion is small, and drooling is basically non-existent. As the baby grows older, when he is four or five months old, the trigeminal nerve is stimulated by complementary food, saliva secretion increases, and the baby's oral control ability is not strong, which will cause drooling. Mothers don’t need to worry. As the baby grows, his swallowing ability improves and the drooling phenomenon will generally disappear by around three years old.

Pathological causes

It mainly refers to the baby drooling due to certain diseases, such as oral ulcers, mucosal inflammation, cretinism caused by neurological diseases, mental retardation and other problems. At this time, mothers should pay attention and not delay the disease, and take the baby to the doctor for treatment in time.

Do you know why children drool at night? In addition to oral health problems, certain systemic diseases can also cause drooling while sleeping. Some neurosis or other systemic diseases may cause autonomic nervous system disorders in patients, and parasympathetic nervous system abnormal excitement may also occur during sleep, which may cause error signals from the brain to the cause of saliva.
